The Redhorn Gate (Solo Player Living Tournament)

By juicebox, in Player community

This tournament is part of the Living Tournament system. You are welcome to read this, play the scenario, and post your results (in that order). Place well enough, and you may just end up with a Living Tournament World Ranking !

Scenario: The Redhorn Gate
Deck Parameters: Open Build*
Number of Players: Solo Player

Tournament Parameters:

1) This is a Living Tournament. You may play and post results at your own pace.
2) *Open Build means you may use any legal LOTR LCG cards at your availability.
3) A valid result in this tournament consists of reporting your results (wins and losses) from 3 back-to-back games (may be spread out over as much time as you like), using the same deck for each of those 3 games. (Please observe the mulligan rule, and all other rules, from the LOTR LCG rulebook and subsequent official FAQ documents.)
4) After you post your results, the results from your 3 games will be calibrated using the RGun formula** to obtain your Weighted Result.
5) Weighted Results will then be ranked against other player’s Weighted Results, and the rankings will be updated over time as new results are posted to the thread.
6) You may play this tournament as many times as you would like (so you can try out different deck builds over time), but you can only hold one spot in the overall tournament rankings at a time (i.e. this gives you a chance to try and best your own result while only occupying one spot in the rankings).
7) Do not cheat. Just don’t. It destroys the fun and integrity of the tournament system. If you realize you have made a mistake at a later date that had serious implications for a result you had posted in the past, please make a new post in this thread drawing attention to that fact – that past result will be invalidated, and of course, you are welcome (and highly encouraged) to try again.

**The RGun formula has been designed to value both Final Score (per game) and overall Win Ratio (from your 3 games, cumulative). The formula is: (Average Score of Games Won) x (Total Games Played/Games Won). For an expanded discussion on how this formula was created, you can read the thread called Measuring Success .

I'm so pissed off by that 3rd game. I had to go three quarters of the way down the encounter deck on my second run before finding that last victory point. That part of the quest makes it seems so random... it's still an interesting quest to play, but from a competitive point of view, it sucks, especialy considering the limited amount of ways we have of cycling through the encounter deck.

The Fell Voices do help when trying to get that last unique location, but you still need to get it... I kept hitting them as shadow cards instead.

Otherwise, the main difficulty lies in the first few turns (and knowing what quest # 3 has in waiting for you). Getting a couple enemies in a row can quickly put you in jeopardy. I started twice with a Troll in the staging area. Not too bad; you can take your time before engaging him. NOt sure I would have had the same results facing Mountain Goblin instead.

Anyway, I'll certainly give this one another try once more results are posted and I get bumped down... I think my game 1 and 2 results should be good reference points however.

Yeah, I'm going to need to give this one another go at some point as well. I realized that I played one rule wrong in my 3rd game that made my score at least 10 points higher than it should have been...grrrrr. The round I quested to complete the 2nd phase the encounter card that turned up was Avalanche which requires you to commit all characters to the quest (which really sucks if you are about to complete the 2nd phase as turning over to the 3rd phase immediately killed a bunch of my characters who had 0 willpower since Cardheras was still active and were now forced to quest, 2 Northern Trackers and a Miner of the Iron Hills bit the bullet). In any case, Beravor had Freezing Cold on her which brought her quest down to 0 but also says she cannot quest. I played that Avalanche trumps Freezing Cold (which I have since learned is incorrect) and commited her to the quest which then caused her to immediately be discarded. Hence, plues 10 points onto the top of my score. I finished the 3rd phase a couple of rounds later - I don't think she would have helped me finish any sooner so I think it was just 10 points this mistake cost me.

Played with Dain Ironfoot, Bifur, and Dwalin. I somehow got it into my head that the Arwen card looked like Snow White and so it amused me to do a "Snow White and the Seven Dwarves" deck.

I'll try to get around to trying the scenario again; I generally don't play a quest more than once in a solo game with a deck that I've already been victorious with.

Game 2 Result: Loss

My set-up draw was Fanuidhol and my first questing phase draw was Celebdil. I did manage to make it over both mountains, but I hadn't gotten a chance to stock up on allies and ended up over-run by Wargs.

Game 3 Result: 174

Final Threat Level: 29

Damage Tokens on Remaining Heroes: 2
Victory Points Earned: 7

Very brutal. A combination of Treachery cards took out both Dain and Dwalin and by the end Bifur had two damage tokens and was engaged with a Snow Warg. Then I drew the ONE card that could really save me...Long Beard Mapmaker, mustly because Bifur was sitting on a TON of Resource Tokens and I was able to hammer out just enough Progress Tokens.

I Think Redhorn Gate may well be my favorite solo quest to date. It's challenging, but not nigh impossible. I've also managed to beat it with a few different deck styles, which says to me that it's not like Journey to Rhosgobel, which really requires tailoring your deck for the quest.

I play with 1 core set and all available packs. Secrecy! what up! worked pretty well most of the time but the consistency isn't quite there yet, I played a bunch of games and always won one, lost one, etc. My scores were pretty similar both times though. I usually lost one hero to Frozen. I can't wait for secrecy to get better!

Neat. I'm keen to try out a Secrecy deck myself. I really want to make one with Frodo and Bilbo (sneaky Hobbits!).

First two rounds got dominated by trolls and couldn't get enough firepower or VPs to win. Second round had plenty of progress on final stage but VPs were buried in the encounter deck. Last round was able to finish a troll with Gandalf after troll shadow card was the other troll. I really enjoyed playing this tournament. I'm definitely going to play some other scenarios.

Hi Golden_Nightengale! Welcome to the Living Tournaments!!

The # of Rounds Completed gets multiplied by 10, so if I read this right, that would make your Game 3 Result = 149.

If I've gotten confused somewhere, let me know.

I had a quite lucky draw in my last game. Celebdil was revealed during the setup. I played Bofur in round 2 and got "Frozen Cold" (don't know the English card names of this scenario), attached it to Dáin and explored the mountain in one single turn. Next round came Miner of the Iron Hills to who helped Dáin out of the cold (yes, they cuddled up to each other). Next encounter was "Bitter Wind" and then "Avalanche!" which I placed back on the top of the encounter deck with "Shadows of the Past". Quite a good combo! I only met one enemy during the game (Black Uruks) and one other location. Gandalf helped my heroes over the Caradhras, afterwards it was quite easy with one test of Will still in my hand.

In the second game I had a good start. I already had explored Fanuidhol, but then I made a fatal error when I let a Black Uruk attack me undefended and he got 2 extra attack because of an shadow effect. Lesson learned!

Hey, 105 was also my best score with those heroes on that quest.

I've said it on another post somewhere, but I'll say it again... What a FUN scenario!

Game 1 was amazing. Had three Northern Trackers which helped destroy locations and Caradhras. It was a sprint through the mountains.

Game 2 was rough. Eowyn and Prince Imrahil became snowpeople and were left in the mountains. Still finished but with great sorrow.

Game 3 was like a family camping trip that wouldn't end. I had plenty of allies and Dunhere was amped up with +2 attack and Unexpected Courage. He was able to slaughter enemies in the staging area due to the fact that my threat was so low the enemies would sit there while Dunhere rode by on his trusty steed and slashed them into hamburger. It took a long time to find those VPs in the encounter deck. I would like to thank Gandalf for meeting me on the Dimrill Stair, Galadrim's Greeting and Stand and Fight for managing my threat.

I would like to know how can "Stand and Fight" help managing your threat.

Left my beloved Dwarves behind this time (they had a beer too much), and since the Elves had a contest about the "Catch the Butterfly" trophy Arwen had to choose a different company. As she looked at her three companions she sighed as she couldn't imagine that these three fellows would be able to bring her home...

"See my lady, we Gondorians are that great, we can do everything", Boromir told Arwen when the sight of Rivendell appeared before them.

"Well, most of all I have to thank this Northern Tracker who carried me half the way over the Caradras", Arwen answered. "But where is he?"

As they soon found out the Tracker was gone, and with him Arwen's secret diary. The man was a thief!

"Boromir, Frodo, Bilbo! This book must not fall into the hands of a stranger. All these poems were written for my beloved Aragorn alone. Will you help me to get it back? Even if that means to travel the whole way back?"

The last game was an interesting challenge. I got a Warg Lair, Celebdil and Dimrill Stair early in the game. I was saved by the Westroad Traveller and the Frodo / Good Meal / Galadhrim's Greeting combo. That way (and thanks toe Secret Paths) my threat was still low enough to avoid a fight with the Mountain Warg until I had enough support to defeat it. Some Misty Mountain Eagles and Haldir joined my fellowship.

Of course the Northern Tracker never appears when you desperatly need him, and with the staging area full of locations it was the Escort from Edoras that helped me explore the Celebdil which was shuffled back later in the encounter deck thanks to Dimrill Stair, but at least my threat was lowered by 11 points. I also had three Gandalfs in my hand and Henamarth looking out for some Bitter Winds and other dangerous treacheries.

Fortunatly my fellowship soon found a way over the Fanuidhol just after they passed the Caladhras. That's why Arwen got home just before dinner.

The deck list:

Neutral :

3x Gandalf

3x Good Meal

3x Shadow of the Past

Tactics:

3x Eagles of the Misty Mountains

1x Swift Strike

2x Feint

3x Sword Mastery

Spirit:

2x Northern Tracker

2x Escort from Edoras

2x Westroad Traveller

2x Favour of the Lady

1x Unexpected Courage

2x Galadhrim's Greeting

2x Test of Will

2x Hasty Stroke

Lore:

2x Haldir of Lórien

3x Daughter of the Nimrodel

2x Mirkwood Runner

2x Miner of the Iron Hills

1 x Henamarth Riversong

3x Fast Hitch

2x Secret Paths

2x Rumour from the Earth

Strategy:

With Arwen adding an extra resource a three sphere deck is playable even without leadership snd songs, but resource management is still the most difficult part, especially if you get some Bitter Winds early in the game.

Boromir is obviously there to keep the enemies at bay. It is important to have Daughter of the Nimrodel to heal him every round which is why I have three copies of here in my deck. Sword Mastery is an obvious choice to support Boromir. I never used Swift Strike so I guess this card might be replaced with another one.

I chose Frodo because he has the spirit sphere, he has a low threat and enough WP. He is also able to use these nice Hobbit attachments and can take a blow when you need it. He might well be replaced by Éowyn, but I try not to use her as often as I can.

Bilbo covers the lore sphere and provides the player with enough cards.

Allies were chosen for their WP (Escort, Westroad Traveller, Haldir, EotMM) special abilities (Henamarth, DotN, Miner, Northern Tracker) or for their fighting abilities (Mirkwood Runner and again Northern Tracker, Haldir and EotMM). Low cost allies are important, as Bitter Winds makes it difficult to pay for the expensive ones.

The player should get two 2 WP allies out by round 3. That gives him 9 WP or even 10 WP if Boromir is also questing. Like already mentioned, Daughter of the Nimrodel should be played ASAP. If the player gets Freezing Cold he should attach it to Boromir. Usually there is enough time to get Miner of the Iron Hills before it gets to stage 3B. In the worst case Bromir has to be sacrificed, he is of little help in stage 3B anyway. So don't play Favour of the Lady on him, but on Frodo alone. Gandalf and/or Escort should be kept in the player's hand so that they can be used to explore ths Caradhras in a single turn. Rumour from the Earth or Henamarth sould be used at the end of 2B and the beginning of 3B in case there's a Snowstorm coming. A Good Meal should be attached to Frodo to play Galadhrim's Greeting for only 1 resource. Shadow of the Past can bring back one of the VP mountains in case they have been drawn as a shadow card. It can also be used to ensure that an "easy" encounter will be drawn next round. Northern Tracker should be played ASAP to expore Caradhras to a maximum of 8 progress. Don't be shy to use Test of Will against the Warg Lair, especially when you get this location early in the game. The Mountain Warg is much more dangerous than Freezing Cold when drawn early.

Come on guys.....what the **** was that. I had 2 pretty good games and one terrible.

Funny thing. I had enought tokens on 3b in round 5.......yes the other 18 rounds were just for the victory points. And I didn´t fight once. So no cards were lost due to shadow cards.

In the third game I had 6 victory points in the staging are but couldn´t quest faste enough......

In game 3 there was one time were I had freezing cold on every hero.

Man If not for game 2 this would have been a great result.....

Good to see ou finally posting some results, muemakan!

And yes, the one thing about RG I don't like is that you totally depend on those VP cards. Athough Dead Marshes is more annyoing when you have to wait for Gollum to return.

I wanted to play the whole bunch before I post my first results......so it took some time. Also I did want to finally beat Escape from DG.

Yeah RG can be really annoying. And I think it is the worst in terms ob bad luck. There are only 4 cards with VP I think. And Dimril Stair is nice but isn´t enough to win you the game....

Dead marshes al least lets you manage the tokens gollum gets.....

Just realized I have been scoring incorrectly. I've been tallying a round at the start of each round as opposed to at the end during the refresh phase so all of my scores to date have been 10 points too high since they all have 1 extra round counted. If it's ok, I'd like to resubmit my scores making this correction. New scores would be 110, Failure, 104.

It wasn't quite difficult, but couldn't manage to get my threat too low, or finish the quest in only a few rounds. This was my third pack of 3-in-a-row games, until I got 3 consecutive wins.

Game2 proved to be the neck braker….As usual jsut waiting for the victory points to appear.

Apart from that, quite good. Never lost a Hero or was in any real danger. Sadly no stairs showed up.

Well i certainly learnt a lesson today! Absolutely enjoyed this Scenario. I had a good encounter card draw with mainly locations coming out in the first few rounds which enabled me to build up a good bunch of allies and progress nicely. Gandalf came along to swat an enemy half way through but apart from that it was easy going. I thought" is this a level 7?". Games 2 & 3 showed me that yes it was a high level quest!! Game 2 i was swamped by Mountain Wargs in the first few turns which i never really recovered from and was killed off in 4 rounds. Then in Game 3 i unbelievably drew 3 Black Uruks in the first 4 cards!! I wasnt luck enough to pull a Galadrhims Greeting or a Gandalf to lower my threat so when i hit 32 threat down they all came . I battled for a few rounds but by round 9 a Mountain Troll came out and that was that. I will have a look at my deck and re-jig it a bit but overall i had a lot of fun playing this quest and will work on trying to combat early threat from enemies. Will give it another go this month and see if i can break into that Top 10!!!

I had some insane luck in my first try of this. I got Celebdil as the setup card and lots of Gandalfs and sneaks in my hand. Even though the game went rather fast I managed to get Gandalf out 5 times, hence my low threat.

My second game was the complete opposite. I went through all of my deck and then had to wait five more rounds until the right location finally showed up. I also made the mistake of letting the Uruks take my only copy of Thrors map, which would have shortened the game by one round.

Third game was OK. I got Celebdil as a shadow card in the very first round, but luckily i didn't have to wait too long for the other location.
