Camo for Walkers: What Techniques Work Best for You?

By Undeadhepcat, in Dust Tactics

Hi guys -- I've been checking out these boards fora while and have seen some really cool work and gotten some really solid ideas. (Its cool there is such an active community for this game!) I've been painting RPG miniatures for a few years, but am pretty new to doing "machines."I wanted to get some practise in before I painted my walkers, so I tried a few of the techniques I've seen here and around the 'net on an old G.I. Joe vehicle to sort of test things out.

I'm interested in hearing any advice/tips/tricks for doing interesting camouflage patterns --

For my one "test" so far (see pics) , I tried to do a sort of two color "Spinter Camo"

I put down regular masking tape in a cris-crossing pattern over the toy tank (which was primed in black), then dry brushed grey over the tape. I got a little bit of "bleeding" underneath -- not too bad, but I'm thinking there has to be a better way).

After the dry-brushed parts dried, I did a black ink & water wash (saving the Citadel washes for the Walkers), let that dry and then did some rust/weathering with a torn sponge.

I'd love to hear any criticism and see some other camo patterns/techniques

well the only thing I can say for bleeding is make sure the tape is down as best you can but for general camo effect is to cut a pattern into the tape before you put it on the model. This will get you a better camo effect the just putting the tape on as is. for Infantry I have done both free hand splotches and little zig-zags of tape and both work well.
