One question: if a maester loses the maester trait while wearing chain attachments, what happens to the chains themselves? Are they discarded, or they stay "on" but considered "non functional"?

All attachment requirements must be continuously true for the attachment to be legally attached to the character. If an attachment requirement stops being true, the illegal attachments are immediately discarded.

So any "specific trait only" attachment is discarded if the character loses the trait.
