How Viable would a Deathwatch Video game be?

By Tunnelhckrat, in Deathwatch

Just wondering if it could be done, I could see it going smoothly until combat arises. Im not sure how that would work out. Any thoughts?

It would work fine, it just wouldnt be like the RPG. Look at Space Marine or Kill Team.

You may also add that there's been games with a Space Marine-ish feeling to them, like Republic Commando which I think could show very well how you could make a game where you lead a squad of Space Marines in various operations.

Already tired of using the ol' pencil?

I think it would be just like all the 40k video games already made in recent years for 40k. Crap.

Until developers branch out of the "tried and true" formulae and try new things no space marine game is ever going to live up to what it's supposed to be. "Game balance" for a space marine shouldn't be giving out a weak bolter that takes 5 or more shots to kill a single enemy. Having a space marine game 85% focused on melee doesn't do any good either. I know many of you will yell, scream, and rant when I say this, but... Space Marines have prefered shooting since, forever. The continuing shift towards multiple massive overpowered melee centered units to take advantage of the current poorly-designed and increadibly over-powered assault phase in 40k doesn't change this fact.

In short. Developers need to think outside of their box in order to make a decent game with space marines. Unfortunately, I don't see them doing that.

I think it would need to strike a fine balance between "shooty" and "punchy." I agree that the boltgun, being the signature weapon of the Astartes, should pack a serious wallop (something I feel Space Marine lacked somewhat).

However, I think that melee combat should also be a viable and fun option. After all, marines are genetically enhanced killing machines, and it would be a shame to miss out on that brutal strength. Heck, in the table-top sergeants have been armed with bolt pistol/chainsword almost forever.

I think it could offer a good premise for the next Dawn of War game, especially since the last expansion pretty much turned the characters in to lone Marines instead of squad leaders. Having them all as Deathwatch, with a reappearance of Cyrus at least, would seem to have just the right combination of new and old to the next game.

Maybe give the player the option to choose the Chapter of their Force Commander (Watch Captain?) character, while the other team members would be more defined.

It could also work in a more Space Marine-ish way too.

I don't think it is viable. It is too genre specific.

Though a game I would love to see is an Investigation based RPG in Hive City (Blade Runner style), though unfortunately too genre specific

What do you mean with " genre specific"?
