Ok, so i am playing a joust game and we have both completed the set up phase, revealed plot cards and drawn cards ready for the 1st Marshalling phase.

If i happen to have 3 identical cards in my hand could i play one card ( based on the gold cost ) and then immediately put the two duplicates on top of this card or do i have to wait until the next round to play the duplicate ?

There is no need at all to wait before playing duplicates, of course remembering that only Unique cards can be backed up with duplicates.

you cannot place duplicates during setup, you have to wait until the first marshalling phase. at which point you can play all the dupes you want.
