Starting Gear

By wolph42, in Rogue Trader Rules Questions

Can someone explain me how the starting gear works according to RAW. I've read it a couple of times but I simply don't get it.

Hi,

Its fairly easy.
Each class has a number of choices, these are noted in the same box as starting skills & talents I believe.
Las but not least they get to make a free acquisition of +0

Just use the table on page 272 to find out what is allowed

yes, that was my question: a free acquisition of +0, how should I interpret that? Say the group has a PF of 40, then what?

or does its simply mean that they get to pick one 'scarce' item?? (which is +0) and if so: why on earth don't they say that ?

and since we're on the topic of starting gear: the explorer has 2 MIU's and needs weapons with the 'proper machine interface' however I cannot find anything about this interface. How do you upgrade a weapon, how much does it cost, what is its availability??

Not scarce item. An item with +0 modifier. So this can be extremly rare -30 and one pice +30. It can be a group of armsmen, bodyguard. Or a psyker. Anything what a player wnats and fits into this category.

Actually, the rules say explicitely "a single item of +0". People are not items (plus you could only hire one anyway, not several bodyguards).

ah check, I forgotten the +30, so basically it boils down to an extremely rare item. Thanks.

The RAW is one item true. I did allow a person as an "acquisition", a wife for the rogue trader player, ruling that his character had spent enormous time and effort to woo her. Basically, his character was hitched to the 40k equivalent of a grand master artist and renaissance woman.

Proper machine interface is anything that a Tech Priest has blessed/created, at least that's my interpretation. So a Bolt Pistol that was manufactured int he Calaxis Sector has the proper interface, but a Footfall pattern holdout pistol probably does not. Boils down to GM call.

I interpret that a little differently. I allow(and am allowed) to purchase small units of armsmen or house-hold troops and I really cannot see any reason why I should disallow it. :)
