which games is it reminiscent of? what game have similar mechanics? what game is superior in this or that rules?

Just to answer your title, the game is way worth the price but get the expansion as it adds a much needed balance to the game.

I actually think you could play the game for a long time with just the base game. I don't think it's "needed" for anything other than adding more features and options. The balance in the original game was fine as far as I'm concerned!

I would recommend the expansion, but more as a "great to have because it makes an awesome game even more awesome" than a "must have to fix the base game".

Could you give any more details on how it's unbalanced without the expansion? I just bought the original last. I read through the rules, and hope to play for the first time tonight, but how is the game unbalanced, and in what ways does the expansion make the original more viable (other than adding new unrelated options).

Myself and everyone in my game group think the base game is very balanced. We love it and is one of our favorite games to play. The expansion just adds to it.

This game is the embodiment of awesomeness, simple as that BUT, you must have the group of player to support this game because without the good group, you won't play it much often.

I don't have the group for this kind of games unfortunately. Most of my friends either don't like having too much stuff to think about duraing a play session or are wooden sheep lovers...

I'm thinking of expanding my gaming community to play this game as often as possible. I bought it august 2011 and played only 3 times...i'm a sad gamer since.

If your group love epic conquest, battles, questing and managing ressources, thinking about your next move and planning the best option ahead or on a whim, buy it and don't look back. If your group like to play with wood animals and growing crops...not sure

This game is in my top 1.5 (can't decide if it's #1 or #2...hahahah)
