Stoney Sept Control

Hey again,

This time we have a question about Stoney Sept .

"Any Phase: Kneel Stoney Sept to choose and return 1 Brotherhood Character you control to its owner's hand."

My friend wants to use the sept to pull brotherhood characters from the graveyard or discard pile. Is a card in grave or discard technically "under your control"?

Let me know if I missed something in the rules.

Otherwise, what's to stop Stony Sept from pulling characters out of your deck?

Ahhh! Very astute.

I read that part, but I thought it referred to character abilities such as the Knight of Summerhall 's vs the Jack of All Trades ' ability. (In the sense that because the Jack of All Trades ability doesn't say that it can be activated while in the dead pile, you couldn't give it a holy crest to bring it back with Many Powers Long Asleep .) It didn't occur to me that same applies to cards that are still "In play". If that makes sense.
