New to the tourney scene, what are regionals for?

By dcdennis, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

Good morning everyone. I am new to the tourney scene, just played in my first one last weekend. I have been hearing a lot about the Regional Tournies lately and am wondering what makes them different from the fun one-off I attended aside from being officially recognized by FFG? Do all the winners of all the regionals go into one big tourney for FFG? Any additional details would be great.

The regional winners generally get a round 1 bye at Worlds against an imaginary 5-0 opponent for maximum strength of schedule. I think you also get an extra ten five points for determining the overall winner at worlds.

Ah, so the answer, for someone like me who has no plans to travel to those other tournies, is that there really is no difference :)

Bragging rights? Something to lord over the peasants' heads?

Awesomness? A cool trophy? A good excuse to hang out with good company and play thrones? All good reasons, especially because I don't really have a shot to actually WIN I need other reasons to show up.

They are generaly bigger with better prize support. Like:

  • 1 Regional Champion 2012 trophy
  • 1 Signed and certified Regional Champion 2012 certificate
  • 2 Sets of engraved wooden house cards
  • 2 Complete, uncut sheets from a recent A Game of Thrones Chapter Pack
  • 4 Full-color A Game of Thrones: The Card Game playmats
  • 8 Large glossy art prints
  • 16 sets of 6 double-sided limited run House cards (96 cards total)
  • 1 “Sansa prize” - Card box from a recent Game Night Kit for the last place player
  • A Large 5’ x 2’ “Regional Championship 2012” banner to be displayed at the venue

Also since a lot of people travel for them, their tends to be some social gatherings around them too...Overall their just a great time.

To add to this discussion, I might also ask why do you play the game?

If there are Nedly, Shagga and Jaime players in terms of how one makes decks, I would add the following typology for why players play:

Robert: For the sheer lustful pleasure you get from smiting foes. Whether its this game or any other you enjoy smiting your enemy, swilling your ale and sacking your wenches.

Robert players typically have a favorite house(or two) that simply suits their play style, NOT necessarily their favorite from the book but they just love what the house(s) can do.

Sansa: You're in it for the stories of valorous deeds and mighty heroes. You blame any and all misfortunes not on your own inepitude but on the ungallant nature of your opponent.

Sansa players still believe in honor so they typically only play with the house they personally identify.

Varys: You don't so much play the game as you play the meta. You goal is to win but you know that winning means playing nice with all the different houses in turn.

As the spider in the web Varys players typically seek out the most powerful decks at the moment but discard them after their moment is over.

Regionals/Gen-con players are most often Robert/Varys players with the occasional Sansa who goes 0-5 but never drops because that would be dishonorable.

I think I'm more of a Ser Dontos Hollard player.

The games are just a way of filling gaps between drinking sessions?

That, or the games are one reason to get me to drink. ;-)
