Variant: Claim Throne

By Lowlarh, in Twilight Imperium 3rd Edition

TI is great game but my group very often finds that end of the game is unsatisfying. So I made this variant hoping it would help make ending of the game more dramatic.

Variant rules:

Player who controls Mecatol Rex receives 2 temporary victory points

When player scores 10 VP (or when Imperial Rex is drawn) he doesn't win immediatly.
Instead he CLAIMS THRONE and extra "mini-phase" can be played
In that phase every player may refresh ( command counter is returned to command pool AND fleet movement is refreshed) 1 activated system and Mecatol Rex
Then players decide on order of playing.....player with most VP choses first ,2nd player choses 2nd etc...

Players are only allowed to activate systems containing enemy fleets or Mecatol Rex. Players can't stall using their racial abilities or action cards.

After this phase is over player with most VP is victorius

There is high probability that Mecatol Rex would change ownership, giving 2 victory points to another player.

The main idea of this variant is that in the last round all players will try to conquer Mecatol Rex. At the end of each game we would have epic battle in the centre of map. Also player could respond to "bubble victories" and weak military would mean -2 victory points.

Please give me some feedback and suggestions to improve it

sry for triple opening post....

I dont know how to delete it. Can some moderator do it?

I think its a very interesting idea. It would be fun to have a last ditch attempt made by all the races to take control of Mecotal Rex at the end.

Maybe it would be interesting to say that once a player reaches 10 VPs, or the Imperium Rex card is drawn, all the players may try to take Mecotal Rex and the person who would have won in a normal game MUST MAINTAIN control of the Mecotal Rex system to win. if he loses it he must take it back next game round and hold it till the status phase in order to win.

i thought about it but then then there would be chance to abuse this variant.

Player with strong army and low VP could just sit on mecatol rex preventing others from winning, even if he has no chance to win.... that would make game much longer.

I think that it is ok if victory is easier with control of mecatol rex, but making control of mecatol rex mandatory could hurt balance. It would be dangerous if you could prevent others from winning just by defending one system.
