New player confusion on Limited rule.

By Pope1777, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Hi all.

I've just brought this game for the wife & I to play of an evening. We both love GoT so thats a good start.

Couple of questions have arisen.

1. The limited rule. We understand that only 1 Limited card can be played during the step up phase. Can you put more down in subsequent rounds? Would you then have to discard the existing Limited card?

2. I'm royally confused by card L.164 'Call Their Bluff'. Do I name a character, location, keyword, what?

3.Last question. What happens if my wife issues a challenge and I choose not to defend. Do I automatically lose?

Thanks for clearing this up for us.

ive only played 3 games so may not be the best person to answer but heres my take on your problems:

1 - you can only play one of a perticular limited card per phase. so you would be allowed to play another on next round. you can have as many as you like in play.

2 - i think you name the card title. not very helpful if you are playing without knowing whats in the other persons deck.

3 - you automatically lose and she would get a bonus 1 power for an undefended challenge.

someone else correct me if im wrong :)

when u ask about card the best it to put image of card on post. U can find all card on this link agot.dbler.com

I've never tried to incorporate this card (Dominance: Pay 2 gold to name a card. Each opponent then reveals his or her hand and discards all cards with that name) in my decks, but I imagine it would best be used in combination with return to hand effects. For instance, Chella, Daughter of Cheyk's ability is (Response: After you win a challenge in which at least 1 Clansman character participated, pay X gold to choose and return a location to its owner's hand, where X is the printed gold cost of that location.) Since you already know the name of the card, you could use this event to strip that card from thier hand before they have a chance to put it back out in the next round.

That makes sense. Thanks.

Any thoughts on my other questions?

I thougoht Odesai answered your other questions correctly earlier in the thread, but I do have a correction on #1. The Limited keyword applies across all cards that share that keyword, not just one in particular and the restriction is per ROUND, not per phase. So if you are playing Stark and have the Godswood and a Great Keep locations in your hand, you cannot put both into play in the same round. (Core rules, pg. 20 "You may play only one card (of any type) with the “Limited” keyword per round.").

For #3, yes you automatically lose. Is there a reason that you thought you wouldn't? In addition to the loser of the challenge having to pay the claim, the winner claims an additional power from the pool.

Minor nitpick - you cannot PLAY more than one Limited card per round, but "put into play" is a different beast. You could PLAY Godswood during Marshalling, then use Bran the Builder's Legacy (here) to PUT INTO PLAY the Great Keep during Dominance without running afoul of the Limited rule.

I'm going to take a little exception to the term "automatically lose." You don't technically lose "automatically." After you decide not to declare defenders, there is a whole other player action window in which you can try to do stuff like kill/remove the attacking characters, jump in defenders (like Greatjon or Catelyn), or otherwise try to change the impending outcome of the challenge.

Now, don't get me wrong. If you have no defending characters, you will lose when the challenge is resolved. I'm just saying that the word "automatically" makes it sound like the challenge ends immediately after you decide not to declare defenders. It doesn't. While you cannot win yourself without any characters in the challenge, you still have the opportunity, after not declaring defenders, to somehow make sure that your opponent cannot win, either.

1 - Note that you can place a Limited card during setup and play one during the very same round. That is, because placing card is not playing them.

Thanks for clearing my questions up for me.

Now i've just got to figure out how to win against my wife...
