Norvos

By illrage, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Hello. My friends and me are new to the game and we really enjoy it. Now im just building my Martell Deck and I have a question depending the card Norvos:

Norvos:(Free Cities) Response: After you lose an intrigue challange as the defender, discard a card at random from the attacking player's hand.

So if an opponent attacks me with an intrigue challange and wins it, do I still have to discard a card from my hand and then one of his at random, or does it replace his claim, so just he has to discard 1 card at random?

Thx for help!

Regards illrage

Replacement effects use the word "instead," so if Norvos was claim replacement, it would say "instead of normal claim..."

With Norvos out, you're still satisfying your opponent's Intrigue claim, but they'll have to discard at random as well.

Notice that before you can play a Response to winning/losing a challenge, claim must be settled. So you losing the card for intrigue claim will happen before you decide to (or not to) trigger this Response and have the attacking character lose a card, too.

Since claim happens earlier in the sequence and is over and done with by the time you trigger Norvos, it can't "replace" or stop you from losing a card from your hand to claim.
