im still learning this game, what is the joust rules or format? cant seem to find what the difference between joust and melee is

Are you asking about the Keyword on the cards? Check the piece of paper that came in the chapter packs with the cards that say Joust and Melee on them.

Or, it means a 2 player game (Joust) an Multiplayer game is 3 or 4 players - and is called Melee.

Wow, I never thought about how confusing that might actually be to new players.

There are two formats to the game:

Joust = 1 v 1

Melee = Multiplayer - Up to 6 (probably best with 4)

In game, the characters have Joust and Melee keywords also (like Renown)

Here is the gist:

Joust = When a character with Joust is attacking alone, the defender may only defend with 1 character.

Melee = When a character with Melee is participating in a challenge, each opposing character gives the character with Melee +1 STR.

i was confused that playing one on one meant joust and that multiplayer meant melee

havent gotten to the cards with those characteristics on them, i only have a couple core sets and the LoW expansion
