Any video games similar to TI?

By Ninjaman65, in Twilight Imperium 3rd Edition

Does anyone know of any PC or console games that are similar to Twilight Imperium? I figured they would be RTS games?

I remember playing Homeworld a while back before discovering FFG in general, but I can't find that game for my Mac. And I've already played the Star Wars RTS games so no need to mention those. gran_risa.gif

I would say that the old classic Master of Orion II (Haven't played the first MoO) comes kinda close to Twilight Imperium.

Sins of Solar Empire. Not only is it simular, but the time it take to play is simular too. Back when I played it I would feel like I'm just getting moving and look to see I've been playing this one match for 5 hours! Some games would take 8 hours! It's huge and pretty cool, but not nearly as much fun as TI or a lot of other rts games.

Starcraft 2 could be the Ground battle version... fighting over different worlds between different races.

Here's a thought for you. Play TI with your buddies. Then whenever a space battle should start, go play a match of Homeworld 2 against each other. Whoever wins, wins in TI. Then for the Invasion combate, go play a game of Starcraft 2, and let that winner win. lol The game would only take two months. lol

(I liked Homeworld 2 a lot too. However, the multiplayer lacked replayability since there were only two teams. I want HW3!)

+ 1 for SoaSE. The game is amazingly in depth and takes FOREVER to play. The sheer size of the maps is fabulous. I had a game last over 36 hours a couple of times. Granted I was only playing NPC opponents, but it was still quite enjoyable right up to the end.

lol...I actually thought about that once. When I saw the new Rex board game, I thought it would be funny to have that setup on a seperate table and whenever someone tries to conquer the Mecatol Rex space from someone else, we would go to the Rex table and play that for a bit. I thought of other things similar but I can't think of them right now.

The SoaSE game looks great! But I don't think it's available for Mac. llorando.gif

I remember now, I had the idea that when a player does a planetary invasion against another player, switch to a table setup with Warhammer 40k. Then the Rex: Final Days of an Empire game on another table when someone invades Mecatol Rex. It would be epic but as you said it would take forever!

It's a cool way to play though, it's sort of what I'm doing, if I have the time I play 40k PS, if not then the PC goes on and DoW gets used for ground.

I figure Mechanised units are 3k Apoc forces, with normal flags being 1500 points each. Can get a bit uneven on the 40k field but hey, who said war is fair?

I'm still working on the Shock troops bit, maybe they should be termies or equivalent? Or perhaps allow DS units of vets or something.

I might have to give it a try. It sounds cool. Thanks for this.

Masters of Orion 2 and Sins of Solar Empires really are amazing PC games and certainly have a lot incomon with Twilight Imperium thematically. But there are some more recent attempts that I didn't see mentioned so I thought I would point them out while.

Galactic Civilizations 2: I didn't see this one mentioned, but its a great game with tons of customization features and editors. You could easily re-create all the Twilight Imperium races, create a scenario with customized planets. Really you could get very specific in re-creating the Twilight Imperium game world and with the scenario editor even take it further.

Space Empires V: This is another very customizable game in which you have a lot of creativity in how you setup your games, with race creation available etc.. This one is a bit more dated, but worth a mention.

Sword of the Stars: They recently released a new version, while extremely buggy as of this writing they have a great and very dedicated developer that will no doubt eventually produce the patches nescessary to make the latest version great as they have with all previous versions. This game features many of the same customization elements of Master of Orion 2.

Light of Altair: Though it lacks customization features, its visual appeal and interesting mechanics are definitly worth a look (it has a free demo on steam). You won't be able to re-create a Twilight Gameworld but it does have that x4 appeal that Masters of Orion 2 had.

Mayham Intergalactic: This one also falls into the X4 empire building games, its more focused on trying to simplify micro management but has customization built in for creating custom galaxies and ships. I enjoyed it.

Just a few more to check out for ya.
