The Seventh Level (Solo Player Living Tournament)

By juicebox, in Player community

This tournament is part of the Living Tournament system. You are welcome to read this, play the scenario, and post your results (in that order). Place well enough, and you may just end up with a Living Tournament World Ranking !

Scenario: The Seventh Level
Deck Parameters: Open Build*
Number of Players: Solo Player

Tournament Parameters:

1) This is a Living Tournament. You may play and post results at your own pace.
2) *Open Build means you may use any legal LOTR LCG cards at your availability.
3) A valid result in this tournament consists of reporting your results (wins and losses) from 3 back-to-back games (may be spread out over as much time as you like), using the same deck for each of those 3 games. (Please observe the mulligan rule, and all other rules, from the LOTR LCG rulebook and subsequent official FAQ documents.)
4) After you post your results, the results from your 3 games will be calibrated using the RGun formula** to obtain your Weighted Result.
5) Weighted Results will then be ranked against other player’s Weighted Results, and the rankings will be updated over time as new results are posted to the thread.
6) You may play this tournament as many times as you would like (so you can try out different deck builds over time), but you can only hold one spot in the overall tournament rankings at a time (i.e. this gives you a chance to try and best your own result while only occupying one spot in the rankings).
7) Do not cheat. Just don’t. It destroys the fun and integrity of the tournament system. If you realize you have made a mistake at a later date that had serious implications for a result you had posted in the past, please make a new post in this thread drawing attention to that fact – that past result will be invalidated, and of course, you are welcome (and highly encouraged) to try again.

**The RGun formula has been designed to value both Final Score (per game) and overall Win Ratio (from your 3 games, cumulative). The formula is: (Average Score of Games Won) x (Total Games Played/Games Won). For an expanded discussion on how this formula was created, you can read the thread called Measuring Success .

A shame I lost the second one, but first I got dealt Watchful Eyes during the setuo and then another in round 2. Round 3 I had a meeting with the Chieftain of the Pit who politely convinced my heroes to stay a bit longer and test the new chains of their prison cells.

And a second result. Changed my deck slightly and added some Elven allies (Haldir, Mirkwood Runner, Rivendell Minstrell), to help the Dwarves out a bit. Removed all weapons, as I seldom use them. Also included Forest Trap. Have a lot of lore cards in my deck now, but with Bifur that's not really a problem.

I first tried my "Under the radar" deck (Dunhere-based deck), without much success. There's too many enemies in this quest that have engagement values of 20 or less. And as soon as you start fighting with one, there's no end to it as they keep multiplying. Unless you get a couple locations in a row right from the start, you're in for non-stop combat.

My second try was with a high threat deck using Aragorn, Glorfindel and Prince Imrahil. I figured if these 3 guys had such high threat value, they had to be good... they were, up to a point. The Book of Mazarbul is actualy an obstacle with that deck. Also, getting an early Troll totally wrecked me. Finally, I had thought for some reason that using Common Cause would be a wise move; when none of your heroes have any ability requiring them to exhaust and they all share the same starts (ok, Glorfindel has 1 less point of defense), it's not much good...

SO I went back to the very basic problem in this quest: the amount of enemies that pop in the staging area via Shadow effects. Hence, A Burning Brand is the solution. And with Fast Hitch, Bilbo (protected with a Dunedain Warning for those Goblin Swordman) can handle them all while Glorfindel alternates questing and fighting, as required.

Everytime I reached the second part of the quest, I was ready with a massive Protector of Lorien boost to finish it in one turn.

Last game was the only difficult one as I faced a Troll and couldn't get a Forest Snare to jam it. Had to use Gandalf for damage twice to get rid of enemies (the turn the Troll engaged me, he was accompanied by 3 other Goblins since I didn't yet have A Burning Brand).

There's something weird about this quest... feels like its missing a Big Boss battle or something (maybe a Troll, like what they fight in the movie). Either it goes very quickly or you end up bogged down in little battles...

Finally I have a chance to try the Khazad-Dum quest, the 7th level. I still use my drawf deck for the Passage through Mirkwood last week.

I use 1 core set + all expansions up to Red Horn Gate. In the 1st game, the setup encounter is Goblin Archer. Then the other encounters are: 1. Goblin Swordman; 2.Goblin Swordman; 3.Watchful Eyes; 4:Goblin Scout + Goblin Archer (from quest card 2B, where it is killed by Thalin); 5.Undisturbed Bones + Goblin Swordman; 6.Goblin Scout (the card revealed by quest 2B is Undisturbed Bones, which is discarded without resolving). Gandalf has shown up twice, once for drawing cards and the last round for reducing threats.

As Into the Pit, I rushed on the end of the quest without thinking in nothing more. Some losses got me finally to 3 wins in a row, with luck in the encounters, although in the first one I was near losing again, due to a Cave Troll, but I managed to resist him and ending the quest without having to kill him.

2 core sets and one of everything up to and including WitW

After game 2 I thought game 3 would be a breeze and the scenario was fairly easy. That's when I got 2 cave trolls to start the game. The staging area threat sky rocketed. Luckely I wasy able to pull out some dwarves to keep it under control for a little while, but I was dreading when my trheat would get to 33 and the two cave trolls would come down and wipe some allies and potentialy a hero or two. When my threat was at 32 Galadriel's greeting showed up and Dwalin with SoG, reduced by threat by 6. I kept playing more questing allies 3 rivendel minstrels, arwen, 2 west road travelers and a host of dwarves. Well, long story short, I never did engage the two cave trolls. I saw my fair share of battle, all my heros were one point away from being destroyed, but a couple of mirkwood runners helped cut down the horde of enemies. The final quest for the win, I quested with everyone but dain for 24 willpower, there was 17 threat in the staging area. I thought this game would be a loss for sure, but my deck kept me going at the right times. One of the best games I've played thus far, and there have been some good ones. I just don't know what's going to happen, LOTR is a great game.

Great games. Got really lucky with most shadow effects. Twice I got a goblin added and once I had a second attack.

Tried a 3 sphere dwarf deck. In game 2 I defended with Dain ( had +1 hitpoints), the shadow let the goblin attack again. Undefended 5 Damage…..thanks to the attachement I stayed in the game.

In game 3 I played 2 Untroubled by Darkness with an underground location as the active location…..a Eebor Record Keeper with 6 willpower. That´s something I haven´t got every game…..

I checked that the high number of enemies is the main problem here. My Eowyn deck does not run fast enough, so I tried this combat deck, what showed great performance in the first try; Thalin wounds the enemies and Gondor Spearman finishes the major part of enemies; the worst side is questing, mainly in the second part of adventure, but up to now it is ok. An early Steward of Gondor and a late Faramir grants me a good victory.

3 core sets + all expansions (including The Hobbit)

Game notes:

Game 1 was a streak of luck. No enemies except an archer who got killed off by a questing Thalin. Did the last stage in one round.

Gane 2 was a bit harder. I got a first turn Cave Troll, but managed to kill it with the help from Gandalf. Gandalf returned three times during the game to keep my threat low. Henamarth and Expecting Mischief proved to be a nice combo with all those goblins running around.

Game 3 was a catastrophe. I got a first turn Chieftain that nearly killed Dain (he was saved twice by Durins Song). The following rounds the enemies multiplied and I never seemed to get the cards I needed. I took a great risk in the last round when I quested with everyone including Gandalf in the hope of finishing off the second stage in one go, but then the Cave Troll and a Goblin showed up and killed everyone except Ori, who got killed in the following round.

Tried another deck yesterday.

Game notes:

I guess I was pretty lucky with my cards. I didn't have to face any of the cave-trolls. In game 1 I had two goblin scouts in the first turn but I never got the chance to engage them.
In game 2 I got two dwarf allies out in turn 1, and the rest was just a walk in the park.

(I played a fourth game just to see if I could beat my score, but I ended up with 84. Not so much luck with my player cards (no Gandalf) and I had to face a lot of enemies, including the Cave Troll.)
