The Hills of Emyn Muil (Solo Player Living Tournament)

By juicebox, in Player community

This tournament is part of the Living Tournament system. You are welcome to read this, play the scenario, and post your results (in that order). Place well enough, and you may just end up with a Living Tournament World Ranking !

Scenario: The Hills of Emyn Muil
Deck Parameters: Open Build*
Number of Players: Solo Player

Tournament Parameters:

1) This is a Living Tournament. You may play and post results at your own pace.
2) *Open Build means you may use any legal LOTR LCG cards at your availability.
3) A valid result in this tournament consists of reporting your results (wins and losses) from 3 back-to-back games (may be spread out over as much time as you like), using the same deck for each of those 3 games. (Please observe the mulligan rule, and all other rules, from the LOTR LCG rulebook and subsequent official FAQ documents.)
4) After you post your results, the results from your 3 games will be calibrated using the RGun formula** to obtain your Weighted Result.
5) Weighted Results will then be ranked against other player’s Weighted Results, and the rankings will be updated over time as new results are posted to the thread.
6) You may play this tournament as many times as you would like (so you can try out different deck builds over time), but you can only hold one spot in the overall tournament rankings at a time (i.e. this gives you a chance to try and best your own result while only occupying one spot in the rankings).
7) Do not cheat. Just don’t. It destroys the fun and integrity of the tournament system. If you realize you have made a mistake at a later date that had serious implications for a result you had posted in the past, please make a new post in this thread drawing attention to that fact – that past result will be invalidated, and of course, you are welcome (and highly encouraged) to try again.

**The RGun formula has been designed to value both Final Score (per game) and overall Win Ratio (from your 3 games, cumulative). The formula is: (Average Score of Games Won) x (Total Games Played/Games Won). For an expanded discussion on how this formula was created, you can read the thread called Measuring Success .

Posting Your Results (Optional Information): This was primarily a Rohan deck with Gandalf, Lorien Guide, and Northern Tracker thrown in. I had plenty of Will power and enough fighting prowess to stave off the encounter deck. I also managed to cancel all the nasty Treachery cards. The one problem I had was trying to find all the Emyn Muil locations. In my first game I was inundated with them to the point that I still had quite a few on the table when I reached my 20 VPs. In the other games, trying to get those locations out of the encounter deck was like pulling teeth!

The typical Rohan deck with all its synergies with Imrahil. Game 1 was really unfortunate as I spent several rounds not drawing any ally, so Ufthak grew to epic proportions. (had 5 resource counters on him before I killed him!). Eventually, Frodo hat to bite the dust, or else I would have been killed by threat.
Game 2 and 3 went much smoother, though I had to kill Ufthak again in both games. Game 3 could actually have been 5 points better, but I wasn't greedy enough to play Gandalf in what turned out to be the last round.

Posting Your Results (Optional Information): Used 1 Core Set, plus all available expansions. I figured the key to this quest was heavy questing and drawing the Emyn Hill locations from the encounter deck as quickly as you can. So I went with a quest heavy, encounter card manipulation deck. Denethor was key, and then I also added 3 copies of Shadow from the Past and Out of the Wild. Unfortunately, they didn't play as much as a factor as I thought they would. This quest is easy to win, but without a lot of encounter deck manipulation cards available to us right now I think getting a good score is very luck dependent (i.e. how fast you can draw the Emyn Hill locations to get your 20 victory points).

You do know that to finish the scenario and win you need 20 VPs AND you can't have any Emyn Muil locations in play...not sure from your comment above if you stopped as soon as you got 20 VPs.

Yeah, I guess I should have been clearer in my post. What I was trying to say was that during my first game I reached 20 VP, but so many Emyn Muil locations were out that I had to keep going. I obtained 27 VP before I finally cleared the staging area of Emyn Muil locations. This was in stark contrast to my other two games where it took forever to even find any Emyn Muil locations. You can see in my post that game 1 had 27 VP but the others I was able to beat at the minimum of 20 VP.

Ok, finally I couldn't wait, and I tried a Secrecy deck as leptokurt suggested. I am thinking yet that we need more secrecy cards, but it's true that it works. If I didn't have a Steward of Gondor or Protector of Lórien in my hand made a mulligan, and the great card draw keep it functioning.

The second one was difficult, because I couldn't lower my threat. I have a splash of spirit to help that point, but the songs went down of my deck and I was near to be overwhelmed by the locations, but finally could made it.

Wow, that was a quick one. Got great starting hands in my first two games. One was due to a mulligan. So I had PoL and Escort from Edoras and Westfold Horsebraker. The encounters were quite normal. Had 1 token on Gollum in game one and 2 tokens on him in game two.

Games 3three was somewhat special.....I did get an Escort, but no other cards I was used to. Instead I had 2 Good Meals and Astonishing Speed in my hand. My encountes in round one were a setup Warg and a Marshworm. But with the escort and AS I had 17 willpower. Round 2 gave me UC on Eowyn......done.

Muemakan, you scare me!

I read your last entry first and thought "WOW, he made it through EM in TWO rounds??????"

lol

Final threat 0 in all three games? Maybe a mistake typing your results... or wow sorpresa.gif

Anyway, congrats muemakan, it seems that you have been a little busy lately beating all the quests. Great great work, pal.

Nope 0 threat is right. Although leptokurt won´t approve of it, I used my Beravor deck twice. ( mirkwood and hills ).

And apparently I have used it before for Carrock......although I am going to change that soon.

leptokurt, Sauron and Saruman!

Btw, I am now able to get my threat at zero points too! lengua.gif

(thanks, Secrecy!)

As discused in the Dead Marshes thread, I was counting wrongly the number of rounds. After muemakan and leptokurt explained me, I repost my result arranged:

The last game almost went perfectly. Got DG Orcs as first encounter which got me two extra leadership resources to play Faramir in round 2. I also got Bofur for only 1 resource in round 1. In round 2 I was also able to play Éomund. so I had enough WP to quest and to defeat the Orcs. In round 4 Northern Tracker joined my fellowship who explored 2x Shores of Nen Hithoel for me. Amon Hen and Amon Lhaw were already explored by then.

In round 4 I chose to engage one of the 2 Eastern Crows in the staging area. The evil birds got Chieftain Ufthak as their shadow card. After defeating them I decided to return Ufthak back on the top of the encounter pile with Shadow of the Past, as his 4 VP would help me to win the game. In round 5 I explored the second Shores of Nen Hithoel and wanted to spare some resoruce to play Elfhelm next round, so I could defeat Ufthak. But then I drew Gandalf in round 6, having Sneak Attack already in my hand. In the staging area was still one Eastern Crows, Ufthak and Rauros Falls with 2 progress tokens on it. I thus played Riddermark's pride and explored that location and sent Faramir and Frode questing, hoping for a low threat encounter. Here I had bad luck when I got Orc Horsethieve which raised my threat from 28 to 33. Hence both Eastern Crows and Ufthak attacked me, but fortunatly the Eastern Crow's undefended attack only dealt 1 damage to Glóin. Ufthak killed Éomund, and my remaining fellwoship including Gandalf killed Ufthak in return, earning me 9 VP in one single round and thus winning the game.

One question:

When removing both the defeated enemy and it's shadow card, can I choose which to place first on the encounter pile (because of Shadow of the Past's effect)?

2 core sets and 1 of everything except watcher in the water.
All games pretty similar. Just waiting for locations with victory points to come out of the encounter deck, otherwise it was a pretty easy scenario. If these locations showed up earlier I probably could have knocked of a few rounds on each game. Certainly not one of my favorite scenarios, it get a bit frustrating waiting for the locations to show up, but I guess that's also what makes it challenging.

Just realized I have been scoring incorrectly. I've been tallying a round at the start of each round as opposed to at the end during the refresh phase so all of my scores to date have been 10 points too high since they all have 1 extra round counted. If it's ok, I'd like to resubmit my scores making this correction. New scores would be 108, 129, 101.

Heroes: Eowyn, Frodo, Eleanor
Game 1 Result: 98
Final Threat Level: 36
Threat Cost of Each Dead Hero: 0
Damage Tokens on Remaining Heroes: 2 (1 on Eleanor, 1 on Eowyn)
Victory Points Earned: 20
Number of Rounds Completed: 8
Setup: My initial hand is Horsebreaker, Escort, Test of Will, Stand and Fight, Ride to Ruin, Favor of Lady. I get this hand and draw a Gandalf. Play the Horsebreaker. Go to quest with everyone except Eleanor. Draw a North Stair, and nothing to quest. I travel to North Stair, with no cards on encounter deck (good…).
1.) Draw another Escort, and play it. Go to quest with everyone but Eleanor. Highlands revealed, North Stair resolved plus 3 on quest. Discard Escort. Travel to Amon Lhaw.
2.) Draw Strenght of Will. Play a Escort and Favor of Lady on Frodo. Go to quest with everyone but Eleanor. Revealed Necromancer Reach, cancelled with Eleanor, revealed Enchanted Stream. 11 of Willpower (Favor of Lady does not work by Amon Lhaw), completed Amon Lhaw, on more progress on quest and discard Escort. Travel to Amon Hen.
3.) Draw Finest, and play it. Go to quest with everyone but Eleanor. Revealed Impassable Chasm, cancelled with Eleanor. Revealed Highlands, resolving Amon Hen. Travel to Highlands, revealing Pursued by Shadow, cancelled with Test of Will (if I am right, on Travel Phase no one is commited to a quest).
4.) Draw a Horsebreaker, and play it. Go to quest with everyone but Eleanor and Finest. Revealed another Highlands, resolving the active Highlands and putting 4 more progress on quest. Travel to Highlands, revealing Dol Goldur Orcs. As no one is commited, no damage is done. The orc engage me, defended by Eleanor. Shadow is North Stair (**** !), no damage is done. Finest put 1 damage on orc.
5.) Draw a West Road Traveller. Go to quest with everyone but Eleanor and Finest. Revealed Chieftain Uftak, resolving the active Highlands and putting 3 more progress on quest. Traveled to Highlands, revealing Treacherous Fog for nothing. Orc defended by Eleanor, shadow card is another orc, so Eleanor takes 1 damage. Finest put 1 damage on orc.
6.) Draw another Finest, and play it. Go to quest with everyone but Eleanor and both Finest. Revealed Orc Thieves, raising my threath by 2. I resolve the Highlands and put 1 more progress on quest. I travel to Enchanted Stream, exhausting 1 Finest to play Strenght of Will and resolve it. Eleanor defends orc, shadow is Necromancer Pass. Finest kill the orc.
7.) Draw Escort. Play West Traveller and Escort. Go to quest with everyone but Eleanor, both Finest and the Escort. Revealed Slick Footing, cancelled by Eleanor (trying to get VP locations). Revealed Pursued by Shadow, raising my threath by 3, raising it to 35 (darn !). Finest defends orc, Escort defends Ufthak. Shadow for orc is Shore of Nen Hithoel, so re put 1 damage and return to staging. Ufthak get a Pursued by shadow, so the Favor of lady goes away.
8.) Draw another Finest. Only now I figure that if I kill Ufthak I get 20 VP´s… so I make 3 rounds more than needed !!! Play Gandalf for 4 damage on Ufthak and Finest. Go to quest with Eowyn, both Horsebreakers and West Traveller. Revealed Necromancer Reach, put 1 damage on Eowyn and killing the rest. Put 3 more on quest. Orcs engage me. Finest defend a orc and another one defends Ufthak. Orc shadow is Eastern Crows, so he kills the Finest. Ufthak shadow is Enchanted Stream so nothing happens. Everyone gangs up on Ufthak and kill him, raising my VP to 20.
On this scenario, if I realized that Ufthak can grant me 4 VP´s, I will go for him with Gandalf on turn 6… and this result will turn to 73; even 98 is my best result so far. I think was a luckly draw, as normally take more time to get the 10 VP´s to finish the scenario. And man… following the turns like this is really, really, time consuming.

Game 2 Result: 95
Final Threat Level: 34
Threat Cost of Each Dead Hero: 0
Damage Tokens on Remaining Heroes: 1 (on Frodo)
Victory Points Earned: 20
Number of Rounds Completed: 8
Setup: My initial hand is Escort, Mustering Rohirrim x2, Lorien Guide, Eomund and Northern Tracker. A very good hand for this scenario with Guide and Tracker togheter, so I draw one more, a Finest. Play Finest, go to quest with Frodo and Eowyn. Reveal a Dol Guldur orc, putting 1 damage on Frodo and raising 1 threath with his response ability. I travel to Amon Lhaw. The orc engages me, defended by Eleanor. His shadow is Enchanted Stream for no effect. Finest deal 1 damage to him.
1.) Draw a Horsebreaker, and play the Tracker. Go to quest with Frodo, Eowyn and tracker, putting 1 progress on locations.
