I've had this gun for years.......

By Flaminpiglet, in Rogue Trader

I was wondering if anyone out there has considered giving players a bonus to their WS or BS for using the same weapon for years or after killing countless foes?

Rogue Trader is a game of macro acquisitions, obtaining a single new gun is absolutely nothing (unless it's unbelievably rare). It strikes me as cool to have a character whose weapon has become an extension of their own body. To own a weapon who has taken the lives of hundreds of enemies in the hands of the character could warrant a +5 towards WS or BS, regardless of its craftsmanship or quality.

What would have to be achieved before other GM's would grant such a bonus?

Why the double thread? This pops up a lot, and I never get it.

Anyways, from my perspective, it might be more interesting/sensible to "fluff" that the weapon develops a Trait or two, over time, rather than boosting your Attack Skill. This is a gun that has carried you through various battles, always worked when you needed it most, and even after being mangled, crushed, or what have you, it has survived the repairs, along with you, and shown itself to be a cut above the rest, worthy of being kept at your side, even when better guns become optional (because lets face it, EVERY Rogue Trader and crew can probably have plasma pistols, inferno pistols, power swords, and refractors, if they really want to).

So, what might the weapon develop? Well, one simple one might be Reliable, if it is a weapon that doesn't already have that; many SP and Bolt weapons could benefit from it, and I'd assume even Plasma or Melta COULD like such a trait, if they make sense. If that doesn't seem cool enough, or if your weapon already has Reliable, then perhaps Proven could make for a nice upgrade. This weapon has helped you kill many foes, and quickly enough that, maybe even against the odds, you survived where most would have fallen. A combination of your skill, your "connection" with the gun, and its battle tests has made it so that, when you fire the gun, it always hits harder. Proven could also work nice for a melee weapon, if you are one of those folks who actually likes dueling with swords, and chopping with axes.

In wrap up, if you and your GM liked the idea, the weapon could "develop" something akin to Reliable, or maybe even Proven (1), making it a trusted ally in your hands. It would take a long time, likely, and I'm not sure how much it would cost/what you would pay for it, but if you could fork it over to a smith, and have them make it better, years of your own tinkering, trial-fighting, and "spiritual connection" could engender a similar effect in the weapon.

The logical one to add to such a weapon is Customised. Then start looking at other traits. (possibly that weapon granting Quick Draw for itself, unless you already have it, of course)

A nice addition to any weapon used in extensive battle versus the minions of Chaos, or perhaps in the protection of an influential member of the Adeptus Ministorum, may earn the appropriate blessing ceremonies and purity seals to become sanctified. A dedicated servant of the Emperor, showing the purest dedication in His holy might, may infuse their weapon with an infinitesimal portion of their divine faith. In this manner even a lowly musket or club may become an Anointed Weapon (Daemon Hunter: Page 77). The latter of these options is, at maximum, a once in a century occurrence and should only be provided after a unique display of faith and selfless devotion to the creed of the Imperium.

Something a bit more devious, usually picked up unknowingly during a brief flicker of the Geller Field, could be a malignant entity. Seeking to spread pain and suffering they attach themselves to something almost guaranteed to be brought into battle as often as possible, this being the players favorite armament. The Warp Weapon special quality (Black Crusade: Page 152) would be a temptingly powerful, yet spiritually ruinous, property and an almost assured death sentence if any Imperial officials ever found out.

Sorry for the double post everyone, when frustration is paired with Internet Explorer the result are sure to annoy.

Thank you all for the suggestions, extremely helpful! I am partial to Alasseo's suggestions as my idea was a bonus granted due to extended use and familiarity, not the result of faith or warp entities. However, such upgrades could form tasty sub-plot hooks gran_risa.gif

I have to ask... why would someone give a weapon Proven (1)? All weapons already HAVE Proven (1) since you can't even roll 0 out of 1 to 10!

Just pointing that out.
