This website you've got is staggeringly good and hope to see you add more to it over time, 'cause I got it bookmarked for sure!
New map of Scintilla

On the off chance you were being serious, the estimates range from 7km to 25km+.
According to Richard Williams, a Black Library Author who's posted on this point on the BL forums, an Imperial Lunar Cruiser is 3 km long. Even though in one of his books he described it as 8km long. On the forum he said he now believed that 3km was the appropriate scale. This is (apparently) the "default" size BL authors are working to in scaling Imperial vessels.
However, 40k is nothing if not multi-authored and inconsistent, so anyone's guess is as good as mine. I tend to think in terms of 3k for Imperial cruisers, though. It's big without being ridiculously big.
Back to the main thread, though, I LOVE this site - best 40k art resource on the web, I reckon, keep up the excellent work, guys! Your pictures are easily good enough to grace the cover of DH books.
There was an official statement from Andy Chambers, the designer of BFG regarding scales of ships. That's as official as you can get, the BL stuff is always full of errors regarding numbers. So there is one canon (as far as there is canon in 40k) answer regarding ship sizes, but people in BL just don't know it or disregard it. Just like it is with Titan or IG regiment sizes.
I'd dig up the relevant quote, but with Specialist Games site down I can't find it. Basically, it's cruisers ~3km, battleships ~6km, escorts 0,5-1km.
Still, that's some magnificent work there, I'll definately be using it. I especially like the wallpaper with the Aquila Lander approaching Hive Sibellus.
I have definatly noticed a trend downward in ship sizes as time has gone on (at least in the fluff).
Smallest I remember from recently published stuff was a 1km battleship. It may be a effort on the part of GW/BL to shrink ship sizes so that when rogue trader comes out you can play Han Solo. (shudders in horror and weeps a little in fear even).
That having been said back to the thread topic. I liked how when they did the ship blueprints they included a majority of the much more common and much less talked about noncombat ships. Kudos and here is hoping for more of the same.
Yeah WOW!
I was expecting something far more amateurish and was totally blown away by your entire site. Fantasy Flight should hire you.
Thanks very much! I will certainly be using some of this material in my own game - and definitely the map.
Thomas,
I have a ship design that I have created for my group, unfortunately it is pretty basic and I am not that skilled. Would you be interested in looking at it as a possible candidate for your attention?

Well done!

Hi Salcor - We would very much like to look at the ship design you made. Inspiration is always good. Send us an email at [email protected] with the material you have.
Its really my buddy Krauze who is doing all the artwork, so its up to him if he“ll use it or not.
Cheers,
Thomas
Awesome, indeed.
What kind of programs do you use to render those maps (Scintilla)?
Very well done Thomas.
A beautiful and professional presentation, well composed.
As a designer my only criticism is with the text scale (Please note I do mean 'scale', not 'size') in the two legends at the top left/right of map and on the map it's self. The small size won't scale well enough for clear A4 printing, which is what the bulk of your viewers will be using. With this kind of effort I would suggest offering two versions of the work, one scaled for A3 & A4 printing. And the second aimed at A2 & A1 as the quality of the work is worth the time and money of professional printing. As it stands I would only use the smallest text scale on A2 work.
I'll be watching your work with great intrest in the future.
Hello all and thanks for your kind comments. I have made a number of small corrections. Among other the map should now also be useable if you choose to print it in a smaller size than A3.
Also, there have been some questions to how these maps are made - in general it's not rocket science. I have manipulated some photos from well known planets such as Mars, Venus and some of the moons of Jupiter. Some mountain ranges from the US have also been adopted together with a little help from a 3D fractal landscape generator called Vue D'Esprit. I'll be happy to provide further details if needed...it could be nice to see some other ideas and suggestions of how the worlds of DH appear.
By the way, we have also added a new section to our website http://malleus.dk/Ordo/Articles.aspx which contains gaming aids for GM's and some hand-out images from our own gaming sessions...hope you find it useable ![]()
Regards
Krauze
I appreciate this maps more every time I use it; it so much rocks!
