New Player: Need help with some confusing elements.

By AzureCuzYeah, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

My friend and I split a box of A game of Thrones Five Kings Edition. I have 2 Stark and 3 Targaryen Decks.

Targaryen Only - I am unsure exactly what this means. Does this mean that you can only play this card on Targaryen House cards? Or does this mean you must have the Targaryen House as your house in order to use it in your deck? (Ex. Flame-Kissed, House Targaryn only but why would I want to play this on my own card?)

Ambush - This ability may more sense to me now. So the gold value at the top can be replaced with Influence? This influence has to come from other Creature or land cards I assume? (So you tap them like Lands in M:TG?) Then you can play them whenever you'd like?

Land cards - What is the difference between a card like Dragon Stone (Has all 6 houses listed on the right ) and High Ground (Which is a neutral house) My guess is you can use both of them in any deck? What is the point of listing every house then??? Don't you get the same effect from neutral houses?

Discard & Dead Pile - At first I thought these were the same. Apparently not. Dead Pile dead creatures from play go. Discard pile are cards discarded from your hand? Does the Discard pile get recycled if you run out of a deck?

Renown- If a character with that has earned Tokens from Renown dies do the tokens die?

Thank you

If an attachment can only be played on a Targaryen character, it will say "Targaryen character only," nor "House Targaryen only".

Giving the location (not "land"; you'll break out of you M:tG terminology sooner or later) all 6 affiliations may make it playable without gold penalty in decks with any House card, the same as a neutral card. But it's going to interact differently with certain effects in the game. If an effect refers to a card's House affiliation, or requires a location to be "non-neutral," there is going to be a big difference between having all 6 House affiliations and being neutral. There are some Response cards, for example, that trigger off of you playing a card that doesn't match the House affiliation of any other card you control. Dragonstone is going to make those Responses useless, whereas a neutral card would not.

And no, there are no rules that let you recycle your discard pile into your deck if you run out of cards. If you run out of cards in this game, you don't automatically lose (there's no rule that says you do that, either). but you are pretty SOL in terms of drawing any more cards. Card effects will refer to the discard and dead pile by name, though, letting you get cards back out of one or the other.

I believe i won't be playing this game outside of my group of friends but from what I can tell he two deck types are identical throughout the starters. How many of these cards are illegal? just the Locations with the 6 banners?

Five Kings Edition and other cards released under the old format (CCG) are not tournament legal in the new LCG format. The only way they would be legal is if the card you want to use from the CCG is identical to an LCG card (same text, same stats, same icons, same EVERYTHING).

The easiest way to tell CCG from LCG cards is to look at the number in the center right of the card. There is a symbol (for the release), a letter, and a number. If the letter is R (Rare), U (Uncommon), C (Common), or P (Promotional), the card is from the CCG. If the letter is F (Fixed), S (Stark), L (Lannister), B (Baratheon), T (Targaryen), then it's from the LCG.
