Defeating Abhoth ~ narrowly escaped by our Chen-y, Chen-Chen

By The Professor, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

So, the Investigators for this game included Jenny Barnes, Rex Murphy, Kate Winthrop, and Lily Chen. By and large, we did okay, especially since Rex managed to Pass his Personal Story and spent some time in Kingsport picking-up a number of Clue Tokens; the Relationship Card between Rex and Jenny allowed them to amass quite a bit of money; Kate ended-up Blessed which she maintained well into and through the Final Battle; and of course we couldn't have vanquished Abhoth without Lily's Pass condition for her Personal Story ~ "Remove two Doom Tokens from the Doom Track."

Right before the Final Battle, Rex and Jenny ducked into the General Store to purchase a few things which they would need. During the Final Battle, the Investigators managed to hold onto the following weapons: Jenny (Enchanted Sword +6); Rex (Tommy Gun); Kate (.45 Automatic); and Lily ('Martial Arts" Skill). We kicked-off the Final Battle with the removal of Two Doom Tokens, leaving Nine on the Doom Track. While Abhoth's Magical Resistance blunted Jenny's attack, the Investigators managed to remove two Doom Tokens over the first three rounds of combat, leaving three Doom Tokens for the last round. Jenny managed only one success on three dice; Rex added another three sucesses to the cause; and Kate, pitching in four Clue Tokens had garnered six successes with eight dice (thank heavens for that Blessing!)! Lily stepped-up, rolling 5 dice...two at a time and then a final roll of one die. The first two dice revealed only one success. The next pair displayed blank sides, offering no assistance. The final roll of the single die hit the board, revealing the Elder Sign . . . a success! The Investigators managed to avoid being Devoured by sacrificing seven Common Items, seven Spells, five Monster Trophies, five Clue Tokens, four Memberships (three Silver Twilight Lodge and one Cult of a Thousand Young [yes, I count these]), four Unique Items, and four Gate Trophies.

Exciting and exhausting!

So, the last die revealed the last success required? We had that win once, against Shubb-Niggurath. Was very exciting.

Very close! Unfortunately, my recent game against Rhan-Tegoth wasn't so fortunate. Rhan-Tegoth was surviving on only 6 stamina with all his doom tokens eliminated (17 of them!). We just needed one more round to execute the final blow against him; it seemed everything was going our way, even the AO plot card drawn was Torpor. But then the next Epic Battle card sealed our fate: You Shall Share Arkham's Fate added 10 doom tokens to the doom track since the Terror Level was 10 and there were no elder signs on the board. To rub defeat in our faces, Rhan-Tegoth regenerated 1 more doom token, filling his doom track!

Needless to say we despaired and it was perhaps fortunate that The End of Everything finally cut off what would be a slow and painful death... This was one of the most cinematic and thrilling Final Battles I ever had, making me ever more convinced that this game is alive! demonio.gif

"You shall share Arkham's fate" is your custom epic battle card?
Can't find it at Arkham wiki.

It's one of the ones from Miskatonic. The Wiki is not particularly assiduous when it comes to Epic Battle cards.

Yeah, that's annoying. I'll start adding the info to the wiki.

The card first adds doom tokens equal to the terror level, then subtracts doom tokens equal to the number of elder signs on the board.

It makes both elder signs and the terror level important for final combat, so it's a great card.
