Livre d'Ivon...

By aenima, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

"movement: discard and spend 2 movement point to bla bla bla..."

discard and spend?!? I thought it' was an error of the traduction by english to italian (scarta e spendi...) then I saw the original one and it's the same, so....

wath have I to discard? I can't disxard the movement point, I can only use them... and if I have a succes I can discart the card... it's an error?

It's just confused wording. The idea is, like most tomes, you can only use the Livre d'Ivon once. Go ahead and use the Movement Points to attempt the Lore Check. If you pass, gain the Spell of your choice, lose 2 Sanity, and discard the tome. If you fail, nothing happens, and keep the tome. (Just treat that first "Discard and..." as "Exhaust and...".)

If it says "discard and spend 2 movement points", then you're losing the tome in both - pass and fail situations.

I can't find an official post, but it's pretty universally agreed that "discard" was a misprint, since this is the best way to make sense of the card telling you to discard it twice on a success (and contrasting the second of these discards with "nothing happening" on a failure).

This is the wiki's position at least, although it doesn't cite a source either.

Yep, seconded. Always played in this way, and always read answers to this question with this very answer. Exhaust, bla bla, and discard on a success

Third...ed ~ whatever. Yes, Julia, subochre, and jgt7771 have it right ~ you never Discard these things on a failure (for the love of God isn't it hard enough!), but instead on a success .

ok... tanx! gui%C3%B1o.gif

I'll put this out for anyone who might be interested:

The intent for spells and tomes is that they're exhaust to attempt , and (some spells) are only discarded when you succeed. Tomes and spells aren't supposed to be discarded when you fail. Of course this is a general rule; there is a tome that is explicitly discarded with an alternate reward if you fail, and Tomes like Illuminated Manuscript that give you a choice of reward that may include discarding.

Also, unless I'm mistaken, there is a tome that has an incorrect phase usage quoted too. Isn't it the Livre?

I think it's the De vermis misteriis ( here ), requiring to spend movement points during Arkham Encounters
