The Boss/Kommandotruppe VS The new Heavy Command Squads

By SolennelBern, in Dust Tactics General Discussion

Hey!!!!!! Just got into DT after getting my hands on an Original Core Set for under 95CAD and painting the entire box! Played 2 games last monday with scenario 1 and 3 from Blue Thunder campaign. **** this game is promising!

Question is, as soon as I got the original core set I immediately bought The Boss and Kommandotruppe. Those 2 units add a lot of flavor and tactical choices, I can't think not fielding them.

Now, the new Heavy Command Squads are available and i'm wondering, apart from their automatic skill successes and heavier armors, is their a point of having both? Can you field both NCO and Heavy NCO squads on the battlefield and if so, whats the benefit?

From my newbie point of view, looks like I should have waited for the Heavy NCO...they look badass and more "useful" (don't feel it's the right wording :P )

Whats your thought on those? Buy them anyway and field one NCO depending of the mission?

They both have different abilities so youcan't really choose between them as their use is situational. The best ability the Command squad has is to be able to re-activate a unit, this can be a game winner.

1. Yes, you can field both. Only one copy of each unit though. Also, they can't use their skill(s) on each other . So, one answer would be that you want them both on the field because it would probably lead to you being able to use either more command abilities than you would have been able to do with just one of them around. Then again, maybe that matters more on bigger battle fields (greater than 9 squares in total) than on smaller.

2. You write "apart from their automatic skill successes and heavier armors" . Those factors could in themselves be enough for many players and lead to the use of the heavies over the normal ones. They are pretty crucial.

3. Yes, apart from the auto-success and heavier armor, they seem to have heavier armament as well. At least when I compare the Allied ones the heavy one clearly outguns the normal and can even insta-kill all light walkers + all medium walkers to date with a 33% chance if they just can manage to get close and personal with them. While I myself wouldn't normally use the heavies to take out a mech their potential to do so on the battle field could impact the way your opponent plays, and if you bundle your heavies with a hero then we're starting to see some interesting results.

4. Obviously they both have different army points costs: Sometimes you will only be able to squeeze in the normal one.

5. As mentioned already by somebody else, they also have somewhat different sets of abilities.

Though, as of yet, we have no hero with the Command ability that can join them.

Ah. I stand corrected. :) Some of their "potential usability" disappears then.... on the other hand it also makes the +2 HP that the normal command squad has over the heavies more interesting, even if it probably is evened out very well due to them having just armor 2.

Buy both Then field either one or both depending on mission. Unlike most other games, this one is designed to be fun and challenging any point level and doesn't requires a company on company battle to be fulfilling. Equal fun can be had with 2-3 units per side.

The tactics obviously require more player skill and experience in the larger battles.

Couldn't write it any better myself.

If money is an object though it comes down to doing more with the Armor 2 Squad except you may fail the dice roll or doing less with the Armored 3 squad and automatically succeeding in the ability.

The Armor 2 squads ability to bring things back onto the table is pretty invaluable if you make a bad decision early or if you sacrifice a squad to bait out an enemy unit from cover.
