Only the finest silks...

By Okidus, in Deathwatch

I vaguely remember mention of varying qualities of cloth and clothing in the Heresy Novels, is there anything like this for DW? Does anyone remember any mention of any of the Space Marine robes or clothing that they wear?

I want to offer my players the ability to upgrade their robes (Templar) and other clothing for some in-game effects.

There isn't, unless you want to allow people to apply quality upgrades to chapter trappings. That being said, it's a pretty cool idea - head over to teh House Rules sub-forum and give us your thoughts.

Okay, candor compells me to confess that a third of the people will dislike the idea and the other two thirds will get into a screaming match about full-auto rules or something equally inane, but I, personally, would be interested in seeing what you want to achieve with such a thing.

yah, that may be all well and good, but I don't like the idea....i mean, how is cloth quality going to affect me when i use my heavy bolter? and are we talkin' RAW or errata? And what about squad mode? Is that still possible for my character when he's in his finest silks, or are the other marines losing cohesion due to envy? (I know the Fists won't flinch cause they're hard, but the Blood Angels and Ultramarines would just freak, wouldn't they?)

lol, nice.

Simplest example: A Tabard has gameplay effects, so a really nice tabard has better gameplay effects.

I've got to say, I'm in the don't buy it' camp at the moment. I see your working but with any examples given I can't see that it would make much difference.

You gave the example of Tabards, but don't they have more to do with representing the chapter as a whole rather than who made them? I just can't imagine a Black Templar waltzing through the 40K equivalent of Louis Vuitton trying on the most lavish tabard to get spotted at that special ball tonight.

In my opinion a scrap of fur, a purity seal or a skull does not physically give a character 3 points of Str or Agi or what ever it's what it represents to the Character and Chapter, the robes are worn as symbol of the chapters Solidarity not showing off your bling which seems enathema to the Dark Angels or Black Templars.

Like wise who's going to get close enough to read the quality of the script on the that purity seal or fine tanning done on that scrap of fur, in most cases I imagine they already have some of the finest artisans do it, where that even applies.

Clothing quality would have a more social benefit, a high quality tabard would mark out the brother & there-by make him a focus of attention. This could aid in squad mode tests, or perception (visual) tests. It could even draw enemies to the brother & away from others, if a Black Templar, for example, the brother is likely quite good at melee & therefore draws the melee enemy to him, allowing the ranged marines to shoot.

In short any benefits that come from clothing quality should be bonus/negatives to TESTS to do with interaction, i.e. impression that planetary governor, or to act as focal point during combat, i.e. testing to see if the guardsmen you team is aiding has been able to see the order-signals.

The back-banner (Deathwatch rule bookpg. 171) is an example of a piece of 'clothing', it gives no attribute bonus, but instead gives a 'morale/psychological' boost, represented by a cohesion bonus.
