Skill Synergy

By balom, in Black Crusade House Rules

I was looking over the crafting rules and I noticed that there aren't any ways of portraying skill synergies in Black Crusade (or in the other games of the line) For example if I try to craft a drug with Medicae (chem-use) and I also have a Scholastic Lore (chymistry) or Trade(Chymist), I don't get any bonuses from the skill synergy. This can be applied in other situations when skills complete each other. For example using linguistics to decipher a xenos script could be enhanced by Forbidden Lore (xenos). My rule of thumb would be that for every synergetic skill to have a +5 bonus for a +20 skill and a +10 bonus for a +30 skill. Of course the cases where skill synergy is usable must be subject to the approval of the GM. What are your thoughts?

I don't like this type of skill synergy bonus, it's too mechanical for my tastes.

I use Lore skills, in conjunction with chem-use in this case, as a way to modify time or cost. A successful Lore test might allow you to cut costs due to an alternative ingredient that is cheaper or knowledge of a different technique in rendering the chemical that is faster.

I use Trade skills to modify the price you can get the ingredients for and how much you can make selling the item.

By doing this the skills are separate, still useful, and more flavorful.
