$4 would have brought about a glorious finale to the game...

By The Professor, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

...in the end, the lack of funds simply just spelled utter defeat.

The Investigators included Sister Mary, Leo Anderson, Amanda Sharpe, and Joe Diamond. Despite a relatively slow start (4 Gates in 8 turns, plus a "Double Doomer"), we found ourselves short on Clue tokens. Then, without warning, we were suddenly in possession on the Old Journal, a copy of The King in Yellow, and a few Clue Tokens thanks to Nodens! The Doom Track crept forward to nine as the team managde to seal the fifth Gate. Then it happened...Amanda entered the Gate to R'lyeh...and faced Cthulhu! She was Blessed and had a stack of Clue Tokens...unfortunately, she had an 'exhausted' Elephant Gun. With only a "4" Fight and a flask of Holy Water she only managed to damage the Great Old One, rolling 12 dice ("4" Fight, 8 Clue Tokens, and the +6 Holy Water - 6 vs. Cthulhu) and scoring 7 hits, before being devoured. Had she possessed $4...$4!!! she would have had the chance to fire-off that Elephant gun twice and surely would have defeated Cthulhu, returned to Arkham with a closed/sealed gate, and ending the game.

Instead, that proved to be the harbinger of doo, in the most literal sense. The next turn, a Gate Burst blew the sael at the Witch House and then the b=nxt card opened another gate which forces our heroes in a no-so-epic battlle against Yig. Everyone was Blessed...and while MAry could retain her Blessing, despite Yig's Anger, the guys lacked the firepower to make any real headway. It was a tragic terrible loss which could have been avoided by $4.

For want of a nail, the shoe was lost.
For want of a shoe, the horse was lost.
For want of a horse, the rider was lost.
For want of a rider, the message was lost.
For want of a message, the battle was lost.
For want of a battle, the kingdom was lost.
And all for the want of a horseshoe nail.

Heartbreaker, Professor. But we've all been there at one point or another: the moment a promising Arkham game turned on one Encounter, one die roll, one Mythos. Definitely part of why we keep going back, eh?

However, as much as I feel your pain, a part of me still delights when Yig wins a Final Battle. We mocked that "Littlest GOO" for years before he scratched and clawed himself some respect.

jgt7771,

Love the story...yes, we've al been there and quite honestly, as sweet as it would have been to win, I agree with you when it comes to Yig. The "-3" modifier and no resistances/immunities places him as the 90-lb weakling in the group...until you factor in the Curses, and you don't have weapons...

oh not me, never! I always play Yig with an imaginary herald that says

"Investigators cannot purchase a Blessing at the South Church."

I have never figured out the rest - that is bad enough.

Actually, that's a brilliant idea for a nasty herald!

Somehow reminded me of our recent wombo-combo. I was going through OW with 5 Clue tokens ready to seal and 4 Sanity remaining.

And I got this encounter, which lets you search an Unique item deck for any item and take at cost of 3 Sanity and Curse. I accepted and took an Elder Sign(was in desperate need of one doom token removal), reducing me to 1 sanity. Then I figured out that if I use Elder Sign now, I'll lose 2 Clue tokens and won't be able to seal next one.

And then I remembered one of my friends had a Book of Anubis. And 3 Clue tokens. And he was in 1st location of the other world.

So, I sealed the gate with the Elder Sign, gone insane, transferred 2 of my Clue tokens to my friend with Book of Anubis and 3 Clue tokens this way, making him 5 and able to seal the gate he'll soon will leave. Was a nice turnout.

We still lost this game though, because of despite 5 Elder Signs on the board, not a single time gate opened at the Elder Sign location, and we had no means to defeat Cthugga in final battle.

Oh, we've all been here. Those GOO other world battles are horrifying when they come up. Being killed by Yig is just salt in the wound.

I personally forbid those AO battle OW encounter cards and just discard em and draw againhappy.gif

They are too much for me.

Sadly, at the moment I don't have the strength (or the time) to work on anything :-/
