The Revised Core Set Conundrum....

By Maximum2, in Dust Tactics General Discussion

Decided to buy a second Revised Core Set the other day both for some more dice, Heavy Laser squad, Both light walkers, multiple units for scratch builds and the other bits that come along with it. Now I'm pondering what to do with the duplicate Lara and Rhino heroes, suggestions welcome!

Finally got to see how the Corps Officers and Heavy Kommandotrupp interact on the battlefield. They are easily worth the point cost with their automatic successes for their abilities. Lots of fun. gran_risa.gif

I ran out of regular units in a big game we had so I was forced to actually field the Death Dealers. The missing UGLs (despite being on the models) caused them to fail dealing death. Seems like a typo based on their cost.

This is my alt Rhino...

Considering they're "supposed" to be ltd to this set I would suggest you use them as trade-ables. Going through the tourney lists that were posted from the most recent event it would seem Lara especially is pretty much a definate starter for most competetive Axis lists. Add to this that not everyone would be inclined to purchase the RCS (I haven't) and you've got a couple of figs that people would be interested in.

Great idea! aplauso.gif

With a little tweaking those models make for alt versions with brand new character themselves as the pictured one... You can just be creative...

I rather like the Death Dealers. Consider their compared abilities with other Allied Armor 2 infantry against enemy Armor 2 infantry and vehicles.

The Recon Boys do one more anti-infantry dice at range four, and match them at range three unless they use their two UGL shots, but have no anti-tank capability for eight points less.

The Gunners have the same anti-tank capability, but can only match or exceed the Death Dealers anti-infantry capability by using their limited UGL's for three points less. Adding Johnny One-Eye can eliminate the ammo limitation, and an NCO command Squad could extend it, but both options make the unit effectively cost significantly more.

The Bot Hunters have better anti-tank capability, but are very limited for anti-infantry work for one point less.

The Boss matches their firepower like the Recon Boys without their UGL's, but are a limited unit, and cost seventeen points more.

The BBQ Squad and Hell Boys can do more damage, but only at range one, and cost significantly more at seven and eleven points more.

Against Armor 3 infantry, the Recon Boys and Gunners have to use their UGL's for more damage, and the BBQ Squad and Hell Boys do more damage. Everyone else matches them for firing, though the Gunners, BBQ Squad, and Hell Boys can also damage them in close combat.

The Death Dealers are not extreme specialists, but they can maintain a good level of anti-infantry and anti-tank capability at good range without requiring a hero. Let the unit take three damage, and they remain a reasonable threat, actually exceeding the other infantry.

I like them due to their tactical flexibility, because they can be a threat to any enemy unit at range, even after taking damage.

Death Dealers are a very good wild card. They are not really great at anything, but they have no real weaknesses. If you don't have AP to spare on specialized units, a squad of Death Dealers will guarantee you're never left helpless against an opponent.

My big problem with them, however, is just how bland the unit is. They have no flavour of their own. After being used to the Recon Boys and Gunners for so long, it feels really underwhelming to see this squad who is just a merging of the two. For a squad with such a fearsome name like Death Dealers, they really look very generic. I would have appreciated something that made them unique. A gas mask, different backpack, anything...

I guess I don't mind them so much because I think like a soldier.

Units like Hell Boys are odd for me, because usually the special weapons are more limited. The Germans and Soviets used units all armed with SMG's, but the US tended to stick with standard weapons, with extras frequently personal equipment, or scrounged for a few extras here and there. A sergeant or someone else who scrounged might have an SMG or carbine, and there was a section or squad machine gun, but most soldiers were issued a rifle.

The Gunners or Bot Hunters make sense as squads equipped with a platoon's bazooka, with an extra for good measure liberated to the unit, but a unit of all shotguns with a flamethrower isn't normal US or British army thinking. It's great for the game, just odd for someone who thinks like a GI, where just about everybody has the same weapons. Units tend to be bland, because it's easier to keep them supplied that way.

I see the Recon Boys as normal infantry, the Death Dealers as a normal anti-tank squad, the Gunners as an anti-tank squad that lost their machine gun or didn't want the extra weight, and the Bot Hunters as a good scrounging anti-tank squad that replaced their machine gun with an extra bazooka and didn't want to carry the weight of the machine gun, too . The BBQ Squad and Hell Boys are the crazy man squads.

They work for the game, and add interesting elements, but don't fit normal US or British thinking for the time. Walking tanks and flying or armored soldiers are a good reason to come up with alternates, however, so they aren't too wierd for me to accept.

Revised core set units are definitely worth it. And they should sell faction dice tins like every other game out there.

Small update, been working on some custom units and having never purchased Seelowe (no interrest in the apes... I'm primarily the Axis player and they don't quite fit into my direction I want to take my game... to each their own) I decided to build my own OZZ 117 and modify it a bit further as a custom hero for my wife as she primarly plays Allies and really likes her flamethrowers, haha.

Its actually not very hard to make a custom OZZ 117 out of Rhino.

First I cut the tiny rocket from Rhinos right hand.

Next I cut the flamethrower and backpack off one of the hellboys.

Using the old Hot water / Cold water trick I repositioned Rhino's hand so its not facing the ground.

Using my NCO Command Squad figure with the handheld flamethrower as a reference I modified the cut off flamethrower bits into it which requires minimal gluing and simply cutting off one of the two tanks.

Next since this will be a unit for my wife, I put Lara's head on instead of Rhino's, had I not I would've simply made some glasses for Rhino's head and given him a "haircut" haha.

@blkdymnd - I was very tempted to make an Iron Man with Rhino. gran_risa.gif

My other custom unit I've been working on will be a replacement for the upcoming Priest hero. For this I've gone with my own version of the recently released Captain America live action movie.

For the shield arm I bought a Captain America Hero Clix figure (75 cents) he's the one with the older diamond shield which I prefer to the round disc.

Next I simply took a regular spare soldier that was in "the pointing stance", cut his arm at the elbow.

Took the Hero Clix figure mentioned above and cut it at the elbow.

Glued both bits together and cut a bit of the excess, the scale is virtually identical.

Next I trimmed the trench coat away to make them into pants, this actually turned out to be pretty easy to get it to look good.

For the head I grabbed a "Red Guardian" (50 cents) Hero Clix figure which has a near perfect Captain America head, carefully painted

The Priest apparently has Agile so it seems like a perfect fit, just need his stat card at this point.

I've also got a Red Skull Hero Clix figure (again under a buck!) which I'll have to make something of....

I'll post a picture once they're painted up a bit more.

Pics are now required.

Here are two images I took for you guys, the below one is of course the modification I did of "OZZ 117" remade for my Wife, Still have some highlights and the base to finish but it looks pretty good. The picture was taken in direct sunlight so you can't really see that her gloves and "wings" have purple in them.

OZZ 117 REMADE for my Wife (Work in Progress)

Next up is the ongoing "Captain America" I've been working on. Stat-wise he is a Type 2 infantry with a M2 AR which has the same range but one more dice added to each pool as such he can damage an armor 4 infantry 1/1 and armor 3 walker 1/1. His shield has the same stats as a Rocket Punch and since it isn't the disc version its only Close Combat. His skills are Agile and Damage Resilient; according to the rule book he won't share that with the group so it should just simulate his shield blocking shots, points cost of 24.

They're not done yet as you can see so no 'final critique' is needed, just felt like posting some WIP images. lengua.gif

The real question is how did you find a wife to play DT with you and does she have a hot sister in South New Jersey?

She had a red headed stepsister that looks like the Wendy's girl who lives in Deptford.

Only kidding.
