Pistols and the Accurate Trait

By Brother Techmarine Harkus, in Rogue Trader Rules Questions

Hey there,

I've been wondering about Pistol weapons with the accurate trait. Raw state that only basic weapons get another 2d10 to dmg if u score enough degrees of success. So I wonder wether Pistols get the extra dmg as well since they got the trait.

By RAW, this is correct. It's a rule i've taken advantage of on more than one occasion, offering pistols that are treated as Basic for such purposes as ingame rewards and the like.

Pistols are not Basic weapons and do not get the damage bonus, only the extra aim bonus.

If you're treating it as Basic, why not just count it as a Basic weapon? Why call it a Pistol at all?

Because there are a variety of talents that work based on the weapon being a Pistol-class?

The whole extrta damage thing for accurate basic weapons represents the lethality of snipers. Using those rules for pistols would be missing the whole sniper point. Unless the pistol is modified to behave like a sniper rifle of course. In which case it just became a rifle as well.

A houserule I used in an Ascension game modified the Accurate trait so that there was still a damage bonus for accurate pistols but it was in steps of D5, not D10, with a cap +2D5. I believe this made sense for a needle pistol which is an outright assassination weapon.

Well,

You could have pistol with a removable stock such as the Mause C96.
Without the stock its just a pistol (no bonus damage), with the stock it is a carbine (basic weapon).

The Archeotech Laspistol wasI treated that way in our game

Retractable Stock & Grip Kit.
A customisation kit for most pistols, this retractable stock and grip can be attached to any Las or Solid-Projectile Pistol to turn it into a carbine Basic weapon for the purpose of all bonuses and effects. Retracting or extending the stock and grip takes as long as it would take to Reload the weapon, to the minimum of half an action. May also include barrel extension and rail modifications, allowing further upgrades as if a Basic weapon (but no longer Pistol) at the GMs discretion.
Upgrades: Any Pistol Las or Solid-Projectile ranged weapon.
Weight: +2kg.
Availability: Scarce.

We found this to be a suitable compromise as well, especially for something like the needle pistol... which my crooked Navigator loves to use with the poison rule from DH.

A Pistol that you treat as Basic is really just a Basic weapon that happens to be 1-handed, I'd say.

Why are Hand Cannons Pistols when they need two hands to be fired?
More so as there are accurate hand cannons.

One big differencs between pistols and basic weapons is that you can use them in melee.
Which you can do with a hand cannon by the way, even if it's two handed.

A competent shooter with a targeting pistol would be very lethal in rl. Just the same as a sniper.
What he lacks in man stopping power he can make up by having a better concealable weapon with which he can get closer to the victim.
So no need for a rifle to kill someone with precision shots.
