Co-op vs PvP

By Budgernaut, in Star Wars: The Card Game

I vote for an Asymmetrical PvP (one player is always Empire/Dark Side, one or more players is always Rebels/Light Side).

I don't think the structure of a Co-Op game can ever be robust or responsive enough to bear the diversity of an LCG/CCG.

Basically, if we look at the "encounter deck" as a CCG/LCG player in the context of the aggro/combo/control framework, it can only effectively run aggro. It can't effectively run combo because it's "choices" are too random, and it can't run control at all, because it can't respond to player actions.

Therefore, strong combos are always going to trounce the encounter deck, and any "control" or "combo" effects the encounter deck randomly spits out are going to be countered by an intelligent player using control cards.

The only way to keep the game competitive between an intelligent player and a non-intelligent encounter deck is to hobble combos and limit player control effects (effectively reducing the game to aggro vs. aggro with some frosting on the side). But this will also prevent the growth of a meta, and ultimately limit the game itself.

My two cents.

I'm heavily voting for co-op. We have many PvP LCGs, and it seems pretty every SW game recently is PvP, so I think it's definitely time for something different.

Co-op. 1) I have more friends who prefer co-op. 2) Even if I didn't, I could still play it. I have a closet full of fire kindling that resembles Decipher's CCG because no one cares to play it anymore.

This is a no brainer for me: solitaire/co-op. There are other PVP star wars games available, and as one person wrote, been there, did that. I love LotR as a solitaire/co-op, a brilliant design that I never tire of and that I can play anytime, anywhere without having to drum up an opponent.

I agree. I played the other Star Wars card games that were competitive - been there, done that. I was looking forward to a co-op game.

The only issue I had with the game I saw at GenCon last year was that it was ONLY co-op as players of the Rebellion. You could not co-op play the Empire. Being able to play either side is probably the one true thing that players of any Star Wars card game want, competitive or co-op - I know it is for me.

So yeah, I want a co-op game, albeit one where you can play "the good guys" or "the bad guys".

I know there are a lot of posts all over the SW:TCG forums about opinions on a cooperative Star Wars LCG vs. a player vs. player Star Wars LCG. My goal in creating this thread is NOT to discuss the pros on cons but simply to get a tally of how many people would prefer a cooperative/solo game and how many people would prefer a PvP game. You should only post on this thread ONCE. If you wish to discuss your decision, please use threads such as "Cooperative? Disappointed." Because the forum software will likely prohibit a single-word response, please use a complete sentence as illustrated below.

I would prefer a cooperative/solo Star Wars LCG.

17 co-op - 12 pvp. Interesting :)

There are still plenty of us that care to play it ;) drop me a line- imrahil327 at gmail dot com, we can probably take that off your hands.

PvP, why limit half the characters in the SW universe as unplayable?

You've got me thinking....how about if they keep it co-op, then they put out 2 co-op games? One where you fight as the Rebels against the Empire and another where you are the Empire trying to wipe out the Rebels?

PvP for me please. Co-op can suck it.

PvP all the way, all day, every day.

Co-op LCG LotR plays itself, IMO. I won't buy a co-op Star Wars game that isn't a revival of Republic Commando, or X-wing Vs Tie Fighter...and those are video games.

I hope it will be cooperative/solo, since I often have no fellow players.

But we will have to wait and see

PvP.

If it's going to be Co-op, I won't buy it. Simple as that.

Papa

I prefer co-op/solo. Otherwise I won't buy it.

I loved the Decipher Star Wars CCG. On a side note, I'm also in favor of movie stills on the cards rather than artwork but then you run into trouble with expanded universe stuff. I thought Decipher did a pretty good job with some of the expanded universe cards they came up with especially Mara Jade.

Apart from some additional rule bloat and the later Episode 1 additions, SWCCG was a great PvP Star Wars game & I'm not sure it could be bettered.

I'd prefer something different this time to give a new experience - co op or solo play could do that.

I don't want just another Star Wars PvP game that's like SWCCG but not quite as good (as we got with: Young Jedi, Jedi Knight, & Star Wars The Card Game). Otherwise after a few years it will be just another card game that people collected but has no player base. We've been there so many times before.

I'm pleased they are attempting to make the best Star Wars game they can and will be interested to see what emerges.

Co-operative. I feel it gets the feel of the source material much better (which is about great heroes defeating great evil, not beating each other up), and is more approachable for non-dedicated gamers. Now, I am not sure that I just wanted The Lord of the Star Wars (I don't have a problem with LotR, but I basically don't want the same game with a different skin), so I am hoping the delay is because they decided to change the mechanics to make it more unique.

I have plenty of other competative games and not sure I would be interested in adding yet another to my collection.

Definitely Co-Op, there's to many PvP games out there already... not even interested if it's PvP.

I am a social gamer - and I love to compete against my friends on who can make fun deck builds (and who can win the most games) :)

And Star Wars is all about the strugle between Good Vs. Evil... Just ask Mr. Lucas ;)

I vote for PvP!

co-op 22/ PVP 16

PvP highly preferred. Probably won't get purchased otherwise in my local area, like Lord of the Rings LCG has not sold a single copy at our local game store.

This post is a test to see if I can update the top of thread.

And why the hell not both? It's not that hard to design a game that could be played in cooperative rebels against a robot Empire, a competitive Rebels vs Empire mode, and even a competitive coop with several Rebel players against an Empire player.

Both would be nice but PvP is my first choice. Co-op games always come down to one person who knows the game best being the one who actually "plays".

I would expect less so in this style of game. Yes, that does tend to happen in any open co-op game, but there are elements of secrecy. Sometimes this doesn't work totally well, like in Death Angel, where I do find the new players are often almost told what to do by experienced ones (though usually it is a committee of players, rather than one that takes over). This is because even though the players can't tell each other what they have, experienced players know what the special actions of all the teams are (now, I have seen this fall down due to the numbers, which I have yet to see anyone memorise). However, while an experienced player will probably know what is better to do in this kind of game, they won't know what the player has in their hand at that moment in time.

Please make the Star Wars LCG a PvP game, not co-op
