Pyro Cache/Campfire Lights

By SummerSeaCaptain, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Hi everyone

After reading the passive ability of "King Robert's Hammer" (If it is Summer or Winter, kneel King Robert's Hammer) I0ve been wondering how Pyro Cache or Campfire Lights work. I've always played that I kneel the location by playing the attachment on it, and then at the next standing phase I could normally stand location and attachment.

I've been doing that wrong? Do the passive ability of the cache (kneel the location) always apply, or only at the moment of play?

Just at the moment of play.

Lol, Campfire Lights.

No offense, if you've figured out a way to make it a usable then more power to you. Off the top of my head I can only think of about 15 cards in the entire LCG that I consider more worthless. happy.gif

So I was playing it right. But why only at the moment of play?

A continuous effect would need to be affecting the game constantly. So, for "kneel that location" to be a continuous effect, you would need to always be in the process of kneeling that location. So the effect "kneel that location" doesn't work as a continuous effect because you cannot - at all moments of the game - be actively kneeling the card (the you can, for example, be gaining +2 STR at all moments of the game). The nature of the verb "kneel" in this game pretty much defies the definition of a continuous effect because it needs a moment of initiation in order to mean anything - and continuous effects have no moment of initiation.

So, since there is also no way for a player to choose to do the kneeling in this case, "kneel that location" must be passive effect on Pyromancer's Cache. If it's a passive effect, it must have a moment of initiation. But simply saying "kneel that location" doesn't give you an idea for when that point of initiation would be. Obviously, when you play the attachment - but when else? In the absence of anything telling you to initiate "kneel that location" again, you don't. You get to a "passive effect" timing step and have no idea from "kneel that location" under what conditions it would and would not initiate. So you don't initiate it.

Compare that the the "kneel that location"-type effect on King Robert's Hammer. The "if it is Summer of Winter" text creates a condition that will be checked in pretty much any "passive effect" timing step, creating the point of initiation to initiate the kneel.

So, short answer: the word "kneel" needs some sort of indication for when to initiate the effect. In the absence of such an indication, there is no initiation, and thus no kneeling.

So the hammer will be knelt forever essentially so long as it is summer/winter?

Thanks Ktom! What if I blank the Cache (Freezing solid) but the blanking disappears (FS is discarded) ? Does this count as new point of initiation, and the location is knelt?

As soon as you blank PyroCache it falls off the location. It is only it's own text that allows it to be on a location i nthe first place, otherwise attachments can only inherently be attached to characters.
