Bran Stark (core) strategy

By Meestho, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

Hi guys,

I am still new at this game and I was looking at Bran Stark game text which allows you to reveal a new plot card. Now I might now have understood the rule about revealing plotcards, but I was wondering what was the utility of this? Do you get to choose which of them you use for Gold, Claims etc. and for its card text or is it something else entirely. I wanted to ask this in the rule section but I wanted to know also the general strategy in using this ability.

Thanks

JN

One way you can use him is to get the 'when revealed' effect of any plot you would like, and flip again to a plot that gives you better gold.

I've seen someone use him as a pre-plot action. (In plot phase, but before plots are actually revealed) choosing valar as a plot to avoid getting Outwit played at the same time (which would cancel the valar.)

Honestly, he doesn't get a lot of talk around here, but take a look at some combos yourself, you could probably get some cool stuff going. I'm sure others will chime in too.

You don't get to have 2 plots revealed at the same time, that can never happen. Like Rave said, the primary use of Bran is to plot into an effect you want and then reveal a new plot with better gold, claim, initiative, etc. And like Rave said, you can use Bran as a pre-plot action if you want, or use him to reveal a new plot after you see what your opponent reveals. I've used him very effectively in the past, heres some ideas for you:
City plots - use Bran to cycle through City plots quickly so they become more effective. If you have other plot-cycling cards you can easily get 2-3 plots per Round, and on Round 3 you could already have 5-6 Cities in your used pile so that you can kneel your opponent's whole board.
Stark Winter Shadows builds - Bran allows you to reveal both Time for Ravens and City of Lies in the first Round, immediately powering your mechanics as opposed to taking 2-3 Rounds to get going.
At the Gates, get your Maester out, then switch into something with 5 gold.
Any plot that gives you board advantage (like the aforementioned At the Gates), Bran into Fear of Winter to maintain that board advantage and get 2-claim in the process.
Take a look at the list of "When Revealed" plots and see what effects you could use; he can even make somewhat useless plots look a lot better - Waste Their Time has horrible stats, but if you use Bran to get soemthing better afterward it could be worth using.
He does work best if you use him pre-plot each Round because he can quickly become a target; I'm always surprised to see him last more than one or two Rounds.

So, if I get this correctly, "when revealed" plot happens instantly so that if you cycle and this on your second plot, its effect still happens as opposed to other plots that there effects would be not be triggered but only their claims, gold, etc.

Did i get it correctly?

I am going to try and say it plainly. For plots that have a "When revealed" effect, that effect is usually instant. Kills people, kneels people, search for a card, etc etc. Other plots say, your characters don't die this round, or your characters are +1 strength, or whatever. Its a lasting effect for the round. In most cases, people will flip the instant plot using Bran during the player action window in the plot phase BEFORE the frame action window of the plot phase.

An example would be to use Bran to flip Valar first and kill everybody. But that plot sucks since it has 2 gold and no initiative or claim. So, you would flip a better plot with better text and numbers during the frame action window. That way you can play the round under better circumstances.
