Cards that are better than they seem..

By Rave, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

What cards have you run into that are average or even solid on paper, and in actual play are pretty amazing?

Lanni box Jaime is my #1. He looks solid stat-wise, but he has done above and beyond what I've expected him to in game. The flea bottom trick, oath of fealty trick, self standing dom... The attachment immunity is solid too.

Motley is another. Tyrion in a clansman deck with 2 motleys on him is a sad sad story. I was just introduced to it a few weeks ago :/

What have you guys noticed?

Imposter. In any stark deck that uses bay of ice or kingdom of shadows, and the new locations like braavos, its +5STR for 1g. Can't beat it.

Granted I don't know the game nearly as well as most but for 1g each - having a couple of Carrion birds down early is pretty kick ass.

Very tough - I used to love him in the CCG days (when Hand of Gold or whatever was legal - the kneel someone to produce 2 gold attachment), but I just can't get away from Core Box Jaime. The deadly and being able to potentially be in three challenges (or more vs. Stark Siege) is too good to pass up for combos like the ones you stated (which are all good ones!). The Noble crest is nice though if you are running those plots.

Flea Bottom to be honest is getting better and better, even thinking of running 3X in certain builds.

I always have been a big fan of +2 gold/turn Tywin, and I know I am probably one of very few with that thought...

I actually think the plot Feast and Famine could be a considerable underrated plot. I have not seen it used all that often, but I find it to be a good plot to use to either help you get yourself out of the shitter if you need to put out a bunch of cards or if you don't need the plots gold, you have an effective 2 claim plot. The situational option makes it fun!

That being said, I think Parting Blow gets a little less love than I think it deserves if you can force or welcome the condition. Choosing to kneel a character and then draw a card is neat.

I think the Hand's Judgement is awesome even though you must have gold to use it. It's a fair give and take consider it outright cancels any event and can't be Paper Shielded.

It may be situational, but I think I like Dragon Sight and how it messes with your opponent's ability to defend challenges.

I Love Dragon Sight but it is useless in a dragon deck, the only time i have gotten good use out of it was in a dothraki deck but i have heard it is useful in a burn deck as well would love to see how that attachment would play out in a Baratheon deck

I think Jory Cassel from Calling the Banners is much better than most people think. 3 for 3 bicon with a War crest; no vulnerable traits, and he provides a great use for surplus duplicates and weenies you don't need. I found him to be a real MVP in my Siege deck.

Rodrik Cassel and Hodor always seem to be huge MVP's in defense for me. I love these guys in any Stark Deck.

Agreed, although Rodrik can be a little vulnerable. Hodor is killer, and I love using Meera to blank him for a cheap 4 Str bicon.

+1 - I run him in virtually every Stark deck, especially melee. I think Mathias is a big fan too, might be thinkin of someone else though.

The easy choice for me is pyromancer's apprentice. In a shadows deck that card has been my mvp so many times.

Drunken Allegations is another favourite with KotHH (Kneel two opponent's characters) or in a deck that has a few standing effects.

Absolutely agreed on this one.

Someone on Agotcards.org just reminded me that Ser Lancel Lannister is pretty underrated. If used in the right deck of course.

in Melee Games Field Spikes can be pretty disruptive

LOVE this card. In the CCG days I used this to great effect in a challenge control deck. Haven't really used it since the early days of the LCG though. Time to start looking at a Martell Melee deck.

I play a lot of Melee, and one day i had a martell player with 3 field spikes out by the 2nd round and he was able to pretty much destroy a Targaryen Weenie deck for the entire game

Hmmm... Some of my favorites are The Laughing Storm , King Robert's Host , but they are pretty sweet at face value.

Vanguard Lancer to bump up Influence and Initiative, See Who is Stronger for Army/Knight heavy decks.

I used to think Warhammer was kind of useless (people tend to go undefended for crown a lot against my decks,) but I think maybe down the road the extra pressure it puts on really heavy hitting charcters with renown could be useful.

I dunno. Baratheon seems to have a lot of great cards, but not a lot comes to mind that is better then it seems...

Lords of Winter Eddard.

He can really mess with people in the challenge phase.

Several that quickly come to mind with an unfairly low score in AGOTCards:

Bitter Crone: Very - very annoying for opponents who favor unique characters and indispensable in any Dothraki deck.

CS Selyse Baratheon: Just what KL Robert and Knight of Flowers were looking for.

The King's Ground: One of the most underrated cards in the environment. Tons of locations benefit from Vigilant.

Flogged and Chained: Not that expensive for Lannister and a very good control attachment.

Fairweather Followers: The only INT army the Targ sport with the potential to stand regularly with a Forever Burning around. War Crest as well, which combines like a charm with Pike Phalanx.
