Quick Shadow question

By Kaisharga, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Sorry if this has been answered before, but I can not seem to be able to find a proper answer for my issue. So here it is:

If a character is brought in to play from the Shadows, say Wharf Rats, can I use the Iron Throne (LotR) to cancel its ability, therefore making the owner of the card keep it (and kneel it as a secondary effect)?

I thought I read somewhere that shadow characters are not considered to be character abilities when they come out of the shadows , but that seemed to me a bit far fetched and silly.

Care to clarify?

Thanks in advance!

So since The Iron Throne only cancels triggered character abilities, it can only cancel things that are initiated while the character is in play. It would not be legal for the location to cancel things like Khal Drogo's or Catelyn Stark's "put into play from your hand" effects.

Now, most Shadow characters have Responses to that character coming out of Shadows. That is, you bring the character out of Shadows (and into play), then you trigger the Response. Since those Responses are triggered while the character is in play, they are certainly "character abilities" that could be canceled by The Iron Throne. But there are a few exceptions (three, actually). Those exceptions (Ser Mandon Moore, Guardian Wolf, and Meera Reed) are Shadow character that have effects that specifically bring them out of Shadows at a time other than the basic "at the beginning of each phase, bring 1 card out of Shadows" opportunity to bring a card out of Shadows. That "put into play" effect is triggered while the card in not in play, so it would not count as a triggered effect.

So Wharf Rats end up in their owner's control, knelt

Khal Drogo and Catelyn are returned to their owner's hands?

Thanks a lot for the clear reply.

But yes, if you use a "cancel and effect just triggered" Response on the Khal or Catelyn, they never technically leave the player's hand in the first place.

can meera blank Brienne of Tarth if she in a challenge?

We mentioned above that bringing Meera out of Shadows is a triggered effect, not a triggered ability, right? Well, PotSun-Brienne stops your opponents from triggering effects while she is participating in a challenge. So the question of whether an opponent's Meera can blank Brienne while she is participating in a challenge will never actually come up. The opponent cannot trigger the effect to bring Meera out of Shadows in the first place, so you never get to blanking. While Brienne is attacking or defending, your opponent cannot bring Meera out of Shadows any more than he can play an event card from his hand.

Now, the person attacking or defending with Brienne could bring their OWN Meera out of Shadows and blank Brienne, no problem. Not sure why you'd want to do that, though....

To remove her from this arguable Lady trait on her ^^
