Does masterune of Valaya prevent all the dommage dealt by van klumpf's buccaneers?

Does rune of Valaya says "combat damage" ? If it does, then it cannot cancel damage from buccanners's ability, because (FAQ, p10) :

Dealing Damage in Combat
A unit is considered to have dealt
damage in combat as long as it has
contributed at least one damage to the
pool of damage that will be assigned
to the opponent during combat, and
at least one damage is applied to an
opponent’s unit or capital during the
Apply Damage step .

The Apply damage step occurs near the end of the battlefield phase, and Buccanners's effect comes when they attack.

OK, so in that case, Master Rune does cancel buccanner's damage because these damage are applied when they attack, which is still during the battlefield phase.
