Challenges without Attackers

By branagan3, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

So I'm sure this is in the FAQ 12.17 but that thing makes me more confused. If you're response is that "the answer is in the FAQ" a page number would be appreciated.

So the question is, "What happens to a challenge if before the resolution, the attackers are removed?" Does the challenge fizzle away or does the defender win said challenge assuming he has a participating character w/ 1+ strength?

So lets say I attack with my Viper's Bannerman alone on a military challenge. My opponent immediately bounces the Bannerman with a Game of Cyvasse. Does the challenge continue? Can my opponent then declare blockers and win the challenge and therefore trigger responses from winning a challenge?

Second example, Bannerman are attacking and have stealthed the Conclave. My opponent then blocks with Maester of War but then during actions, bounces Bannerman with Game of Cyvasse. Does the challenge continue? Will my opponent win this challenge? Is this scenario any different from the first and if so, why?

Thanks for the responses.

Most important question, why were both / any of us playing Martell??

As you say, the answer's in the FAQ, page 10:

(3.33) No Characters in a Challenge

If, at any time after a challenge begins and attackers are declared, there are no participating characters in that challenge, the challenge ends immediately without resolution.

So, you provide two scenarios. In one, the single attacking character -- Viper's Bannermen -- is bounced in the player action window prior to stealth and defenders being declared. In this case, the challenge ends immediately. Nobody wins, and the attacker has squandered their attempt at that challenge type for this round. In your second instance, stealth and defenders have been declared, and then the Bannermen are bounced. The defending player wins.

Question is if there is only a defending character, and the opposing player has selected an opposing title, do I win the challenge as the defender, even if there are no attackers or does it fizzle and I don't get 1 power for the opposing?

The timing of it matters.

If you remove all of the attackers before declaring defenders, the challenge is immediately over before you get a chance to declare defenders. It didn't resolve, so there are no winners and no losers.

If you declare defenders and THEN remove all attackers, the challenge continues and resolves. Since it resolves, there would be a winner and a loser. And since the attacking player will undoubtedly count 0 total STR, the winner will probably be the defender.

Unless both sides have 0 STR: in that case, no one wins or loses.
