Arkham Horror Toolkit location deck problem

By JosephCurwen, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

The location deck card selector for the AH Toolkit app for the ipad/iphone does not seem to have all of the cards available that are in the actual physical game. I have the base app plus the Dunwich, Innsmouth, and Miskatonic expansions, and the most important part of this app is the location deck in my opinion, because when running these expansions together it helps eliminate over 40 decks of cards when trying to keep the decks seperate for each expansion.

The main problem is that the location deck randomizer in the ipad app usually repeats the same card over 2 or 3 times in a row for a specific location, and after going through 15 or 20 cards, it only seems to show 6 or 7 different cards from both the base game combined with the Dunwich and Innsmouth expansions. I haven't done an actual technical experiment to verify this, but I have gone through each location for these expansions mulitple times (like I mentioned 15 to 20 times for each location), and besides the repetition problem, there are some cards that seem to never show up.

A suggested fix for this would be to put each unique card in a stack for each location (9 arkham stacks, 3 Innsmouth stacks, 3 Dunwich stacks, and the seperate otherworld stacks), and every time a new card is selected from a stack the old card would move to the bottom. If the players notice that the stack begins to repeat, than a shuffle button would be available to randomize the order of that specific stack. This should be a fairly simple fix to make the location deck (which is effectively broken in my opinion) a valuable asset to any game, and the best feature provided by the toolkit.

Re-posted from the AH Toolkit forums:

The last time I checked, there were no Miskatonic cards in the toolkit for the following locations:

Bishop's Brook Bridge
Cult Encounters
Darke's Carnival
Devil's Hopyard
Gardner's Place
Harney Jones' Shack
Wizard's Hill
Y'ha-nthlei

The Miskatonic plug-in for the toolkit is a flat out rip off. I emailed FFG several times about this issue, but I never received a response of any sort. I've been waiting in vain for several months now for an update that will address the problem. To be honest, you're the first person I met who cares. If you have a problem with the toolkit, I strongly encourage you to call or email FFG and let them know how you feel. It's unfortunate that they put an unfinished product on the market, and that they won't put in the 8-10 manhours that it would take to fix it.

Regarding the issue of repeating cards, I used to think that was a problem until I actually analyzed the results. I made a series of 50 draws in a row. For each set of 50 draws, I kept track of the number of duplicates that were drawn. I found that the number of duplicates was well under what you'd expect from random chance. It could be that a random distribution sometimes looks like it has a pattern that isn't really there. Of course, your findings may be different.

Oh, another problem with the toolkit is that many encounters are missing entire lines of text. These encounters will read like: "you must use your wits to... if you fail, lose 1 Sanity." I'm pretty sure there was supposed to be a skill check in there.

In general, I find the toolkit to be useful, but I don't use it for Y'ha-nthlei, Cult Encounters, or Dunwich locations.

I just got this response from customer service, so hopefully they will patch in a good fix sometime soon:

Hello Sean,

Thanks so much for contacting us! We are aware that the Arkham Horror Toolkit (and specifically the Miskatonic Horror expansion), have some issues, which to date have been unresolved. We hope to address these issues soon. Please stay tuned to our website for further updates.

Happy gaming!

FFG software support

I don't really have any stake in this, and I don't wish to seem overly cynical, but I rather suspect that the issues will be fixed soon in the same way that the FAQ is coming soon.

Wow, thanks Joseph!

I don't see how it could take them more than a day to import the missing text into the app. All they have to do is copy and paste the text, right? Even if they don't store the text themselves, they could pull it from the fan-based wiki. But at least they get that there's a problem.
