shooting while engaged

By Massaker, in WFRP Rules Questions

Is it correct, that if the action card doesn't say otherwise, you may shoot at an opponent engaged with you? Seems kind of strange to me.

Imagine loading a crossbow and shooting while trying to dodge rampaging beastman...

Usually the ones that allow you to do it are special for allowing it (or they add a challenge die). The "I shoot you at point blank" is why you buy the card.

we are pretty much houseruling this, since most of the ranged action cards and spells require you to be in medium distance to your target, which is for example in dungeons not possible

mostly i would let them also shoot from short distance with some misfortune dice added, challenge dice only if the action is particularly hard.

if engaged it always depends by whom and what this persons next action might be. normally if engaged with an enemy who directly attacks you you wont be able to shoot an arrow as precisely as if you where in short range to him

running directly at a character i normally let them have a try with one challenge die, depending on how near the foe will be when the shot is fired

Spells that say medium range doesn't mean it requires medium range. It's just the max range. The spell may have modifiers if the wizard is engaged and some ranged cards can be used while engaged.

But range on cards refer to the maximum range at which they can be used.

If you wathch the range action cards you see that some have printed, enemy in contact. These cards are the ones I allow my players to shot into their contact. Sniper shot, or the standard ranged shot are in my rules not allowed to be fired against the guy in fron of you.

So by getting some action like combat shot, or knockback shot is the training he needs to move and fire while someone tries to stab him.

But many of them, including sniper shot, has a requirement of not being engaged with an enemy if I remember correct. They can't be used at all

Thats right. Only Range Actions with the "enemy in contact" requirement, or possibility are alowed to be used in contact.

-Execution Shot

-Close Quarter Shot

-Knockback Shot

I'm undecided at "Twin Pistols"

Also I put rules for a player firing into a melle fight of his companions. The only Card which allows it per se without any risk is "Threading the needle". If another Action is used a chaos Star will lead to an even roll which one in the engagement was hit, comrades can also be hit. If a player is also in the engagement he can hit an opponnent without any risk with the above 3 actions.

No need to hous rule it just interperate the basic rules with a little logic:

It easy to hit someone, it's harder to hit him if hes engaged (2 challenge), then add a misfortune die for every pearson that is standing between them.

If you have a special Action for this then the the penalties on the cards apply instead.

miss read the topic as shooting into a engagement :)

easy to shoot someone (1c), harder if hes engaged with you (2c), even harder if hes attacking you (3c).
