Buy Deluxe Expansions before chapter packs?

By theredviper, in 4. AGoT Deck Construction

I am relatively new to the game, picked up a 2nd core set (super sale) and I have the KOTS and POTS expansions to get all of the houses represented. Is it generally better to buy the deluxe expansions rather than chapter packs?

I haven't picked a favorite house to play yet, and my general goal is just to provide cards to play with friends, rather than anything seriously competitive.

Yeah the deluxe expansions are the best buys you can make. Not only do you get more bang for your buck, but it gives you more options. The Baratheon box itself gives you two completely different decks that you can build. Plus it has the decklists with the expansions so you have a good starting point.

if you're providing all the cards for your gaming group, then bear in mind that a house with a deluxe expansion will be A LOT better off than one without- by contrast a cycle of chapter packs will tend to provide far more equal support for all 6.

I think what Mighty Jim is saying is, buy the expansion for your house only. :P

agree with staton about more bang for your buck

just think if you buy the 4 core house expansions you will add 3 copies of 28 new plot cards for your play group that alone will really help with deck building

Thanks that makes sense. I'm not necessarily buying for my gaming group, but I get what you mean.

What about Martell and Greyjoy? It seems like their deluxe boxes bring them to the level of the Core Set houses, but then what?

The lack of plot cards was the worst part of 1 core set. You end up with about 3 plots that don't even make sense to play in each house, IMO. Doesn't help for new players. :)

From experience, the Greyjoy and Martell box just skip the "core set" level of power for a deck and skip right ahead to a decent, semi-competative level just like all the other boxes. So dont worry about it, just because the other houses have 40 more cards (a lot of which have replacements in the expansions anyway, and the best ones come as singles in the core set) Greyjoy and Martell really dont mind.

Id have to agree with that. I have the core set and the Baratheon expansion and my decks have been owned a considerable number of times by a buddy of mine running a Greyjoy deck right from the box.

I was wondering the same thing. I play a Lannister deck and happened to pick up Tourney For The Hand and Where Loyalties Lie Chapter packs and was happy with my purchase. I have ordered the Lions of The Rock expansion but it will take quite a while to get here (well before I try my luck on game night). Are there any other awesome Lannister cards in chapter packs I should know about? I got lucky, but I cant afford to purchase much more for awhile.
