Fleshing out a more detailed investigation: expanding on the rolls.

Hello all!

So not long ago my Rl friends requested I run an actual Dark Heresy game for them- granted, up to that point I've only had experience running a couple of PbPs which usually give me plenty of time to work out material depending on player actions and stuff.

We played edge of darkness for the first session, and all things considered, it went really well- it might have been a bit easy, but everyone had fun: enough that they want to continue playing and are looking forward for round 2...

For that particular mission, I selected Maurice de Mare's "Leave no stone...". Now, I`ve read trough the Scenario and found it very good- a perfect opportunity to teach the players the finer points of fleshing out a heretic: shooting them isn`t enough, the idea is track down heresy to its roots!

At first glance, the scenario is much broader then Edge of Darkness, and leaves a lot to the GM I find- unless the latter happens to play it vanilla. On a few occasions, the author describes a piece of information then declares how difficult it is an investigation and what role is required to find out that particular information while leaving out, in my opinion, crucial elements.

For example, when attempting to trace the source of a deposited payment on a set of heretical brass armor the players are required to do a roll which will lead them to the guilty party. I don`t think my players will enjoy just rolling for the information, so I was pondering of how to put it context. For this part, I figured they would find several joint accounts that and Gelt transfers that would eventually lead to the name of the guilty party. Now, granted, that`s not very fleshed out in that the players will still get the information after studying the papers (or maybe visiting the Finance Hall which record all official transaction over a certain price.) That would give it a more "active participation" feel to the players.

My big problem however, is with the second part of the Scenario. Orsina Wren, a mole for the bad guys, attempts to assassinate the players. The Scenario fails to mention how she finds out about them in the first place- but most jarring is this part:

"If the acolytes manage to survive the ambush it is a basic investigation (+20) to determine that Osina Wren is the culprit."

That's about all it says on the subject. How in the WORLD are the characters supposed to find out SHE's responsible?

I have come up with a few ideas to introduce her beforehand as the Mole: I was planning on having her work aboard a Cobra Class Ship (last remnant of Law and Order on 41 Pry) as a Munitorium adept in charge of Weapons Control. The acolytes would use this ship as a base of operation (As they peruse its partial records of ships that have come into the station) and likely interact with her under her new identity. Now, her trap in question involves leaving a hand Vox in a booby-trapped hallway- but my acolytes have a psyker, and will likely use Psyniscience to determine if there's anyone there or not. So I was thinking of having her assistant tied up and gagged, hidden behind a pile of rubble nearby to trick the acolytes into thinking someone's actually waiting for them.

Now the acolytes will have a few leads in order to figure out who was responsible for the trap-

1) The Assistant- simply removing the bag over his/her head will likely betray her boss' involvement.

2) The Vox- it will bear the Mark of the Cobra ship, as part of its assigned gear.

3) Back on the ship, if they check the weapons log they will find several pounds of Det-cord have been recently taken out by Orsina's assistant. (Or herself, I am not quite sure yet... Maybe she'll have erased her tracks?)

4) If they search her quarters, they'll find she recently payed for passage on a freighter ship in order to escape the station, giving them a chance to chase after her and capture her before she leaves.

So, can anyone spot a plot hole somewhere? Has anyone else played this Scenario? If so, how did you guys handle this section- and if not, how would you have handled it?
