search question / post faq 3.1

By RobotMartini, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

now that the faq clearly states that galber glover's ability does not work unless you are ksearching the whole deck i get the sad feeling that rickon is a whole lot less useful than i thought... so, i my suspission true.... can rickon not double family duty honor/ser brydans gyle or maester luwens search ?

That's right. The top X cards of your deck is not your deck, so Rickon can't copy them. As you've already figured out, Rickon copies the same things Glover lets you take to your discard pile.

thanks ktom. thoug this news saddens me and makes my deck not function as well ;) man! while neither card is 'useless,' this detail makes both a whole heck of a lot useful. At least Glover's event immunity and 3/3 bicon is combat worthy! Rickon though, ugh... this takes him out of several of my decks (especially my tully based tully search deck) since he can only combo with 3 of the deck's cards instead of 8! IMHO i'm not really sure when i'd ever include him in a deck... half the legal effects either perk the opponent too OR cost gold. (summoning plots, kennels, bran the builder vs. at the gates, campfire lights, east watch, to be a wolf, wolf dreams and jayne westerling = good for a uniques-filled direwolf deck?)

Rickon only copies the effects, not the costs. You don't have to pay the 3 gold a second time if you use him to copy Bran the Builder's Legacy, for example.

Oh! I'd taken "effect" to include the entire "triggered effect." (cost and all)

So…

+Muster (core) only requires 1 knight to kneel to search the deck for 2 knights?

+Winterfell Kennels (core) only costs 1 gold to search for 2 Direwolf cards?

And…

+To Be a Wolf (sacred bonds) you would not stand a second character and the opponent does not name another card type for your second search?

Your first 2 examples are correct (assuming you kneel Rickon). However, your "To Be a Wolf" example is a little off. You are not required to stand another character (ie, pay the cost), but you copy the whole effect - which includes having an opponent name a card type, not just the search for something different.

widows watch and at the gates are great with rickon as well.

@ktom - it's kinda funny because i usually _want_ the chance to stand a second character ;) regardlss, thanks for clearing that up. (even if it makes my deck weaker in my meta in some ways) @dh - yes, those are both pretty obvious and i do actualy run at the gates in my primary deck but, since i run a mostly non-unique tully fodder siege deck, widdow's watch (; incorrectly called east watch above) just isnt worth the card slot. only have 2 unique characters that i'd draw dups for ;)

Rickon loves To Be a Wolf, too... stand him to pay for it and kneel him to copy it.
