A Deck Without Dragons

By zachbunn, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

It was inevitable... I think. After destroying with my dragon deck for a few games, all of my opponent's wised up and every game since has been a nightmare. I continued to make the deck better and better, but as it's power increased my usual melee opponent's upped their vigor towards making sure I never had the right pieces in play at any given time. I've had a good run with the deck in joust, but as for melee I just don't think the dragons quite have the tools to get the job done (at least against opponent's that know you're deck well).

In light of that, I recently posted a blog titled A Deck Without Dragons discussing a few key cards that formed the foundation of what is now my melee deck. I do want to mention that I will continue to test and tune the Dragon deck for joust, but I needed something to redeem the melee format for me. Cards on the list that inspired me to build this new deck were:

Daenerys - +1 str to all characters
Khal Drogo - search your deck for X dothraki, X being his strength
Jhogo - draw a card for each participating dothraki

These cards led me to notice a few others (that I believe are referenced as 'burn' cards). Cards like Flame Kissed, Forever Burning, etc. There are still a handful of other cards that I know I need, but I would love to hear from some veterans on the idea of a dothraki swarm / burn deck and see what is commonl used, some considerations, etc. If you have any advice or tips, I'd love to hear them.

Well melee is a game where you can't really play the same decks too much because your regular play group will become aware of your tricks, so it makes sense to change it around to keep them guessing. I think burn decks and most burn cards are pretty useless in melee personally but if you were going to use a burn theme some keys cards include Ser Barristan Selmy, Forever Burning, Flame Kissed, Hatchlings Feast, Dragon Skull, Killer of the Wounded and Shadow Parasite, and the best plot for this deck would be Threat From the North.

for melee consider a summer dothraki deck that uses deadkly khalasar and wedding feast, in joust this just doesn't work but in melee its an easy way to rack up a lot of power

I'm already using several of these cards. I wouldn't call my deck a true 'burn' deck as it were. But, the burn options (a few items that reduce by 2 strength and then a location that reduces by 1 or 3 depending on if I have more unique characters or not) alongside that plot can really provide some hefty removal. The Shadow Parasite also gives me a very cheap card that can get really powerful. Worst case scenario the card is military fodder. I've played lots of games with the deck now and am happy with it's performance. I just added today Jhogo, Aggo, and their weapons. Interested to try it out again.
