Q - Senator Nathaniel Rhodes

Still new to this game and confused on some "simple" points in the language of the rules.. see this card for example.. it says "Pay 1" not this dose not mean 1 domain, but 1 resource in a domain? Correct, So if I tap a Domain with 4 resources, I have in fact paid "4"... everything corect so far?

What I am asking for is that I'm a big fan on control decks so Hastur and STwilight look like my kind of thing, and I was looking at Unbound.

If I discard 4 cards, and drain a domain with 4 resources, I have paid 4? Corect... so dose this mean I can draw 4 cards again strait away? As I only need to pay 1 (or more) for each discarded card?

I am not sure as I am still shakey on rules, but it seams to me that the "or more" text is a qualifing text to say "You can still only draw 1 card when discardng a card even if you drain a domain with 4 resources"... I am just unclear on when discarding more then one card.

This card is also effected by this question

While we are here, card effect costs are per card yea? So discarding 1 card can not trigger the Senator AND this card at same time?

In your first example it simply means you overpaid when paying the cost.

The second card costs 2 , so you must drain a domain with at least two resources to pay the card (also it's Steadfast 2). In addition you have to discard 0 or more cards.

And yes, you must pay for every effect/card separately.

yeah you tottaly do not understand what I am asking. though I did think that each card needed its own cost... thanks for confirming that.

What I am asking the cost of the Senator ability is "1" but if the domain has say 5 cards in it.. you are in fact paying 5. Now the cards says "1 or more" for discard.. so if you discard 4 cards at one time can you pay 4 and draw 4 cards... or dose it mean that if you discard any ammount of cards you can only ever draw one card.

No, you're paying just to draw 1 card. Whether you use a domain 1 resource or 5 resource on it has no bearing on the outcome (drawing 1 card). If it was meant like that, it would probably have "pay X to draw X cards". Trigger for the Response is discarding of one or more cards, so whether you discard 1 or 4 cards from hand, you only still get to trigger it once.

I see... thanks for the help guys

Another ting to consider is that the "discard 1 or more cards" is actually a limiter. If it said "discard 1 card" you could trigger it for every card drawn, but because it says 1 or more, it is triggering off the effect that causes the draw, not the card itself being drawn. Subtle but important difference.

Isn't "Senator Nathaniel Rhodes" ability a "response" to discarding a card... it doesn't require you to discard a card FOR the effect.

I read this card as if you discard ANY card from your hand at ANY TIME you may draw a card, as the response triggers on discarding from your hard.. isn't that correct?

Like look at:

Lodge Librarian
Response: After you win an (A) struggle, discard a card from your hand to draw a card.

This response triggers on teh winning of an arcane struggle, the cost to activate it is the discarding of a card.

now look at

Senator Nathaniel Rhodes
Response: After you discard 1 or more cards from your hand, pay 1 to draw a card.

This just says that the response is "after you discard 1 or more cards" but there is no cost for this response apart form paying 1

Basically I have been playing it liek this (as an example)

I win a arcane struggle, I choose to pay the cost of the Lodge Librarian's ability by discarding a card (I draw a card) then I draw a 2nd card form the Senators Ability, as his card text is triggered by the act of discarding from my hand and activated by paying 1.

Is that all correct?

But you can't just discard a card by choice or saying "I discard a card." There needs to be some effect that requires or causes discarding.

Yes, as I read them the LL + Rhodes combo is fine.

Ahh yes, i understood that the card needs to be discarded though an effect, not simply chosen and discarded at will by the player.... sorry if i was unclear..

But cool.. yeah I thought I had this right... but this thread kinda confused me.

So say that Librarian, if you use his discard effect to draw a card, the senetor can draw a card if you pay 1, AND ritural of the construct can get a token.. all off the 1 discard.,..
