Basically I though that after you took control of a character it went back to your opponent side of the table in the state you took it, as in insane. Though my mate said that it goes back to your opponents side in the state it was at the end of the phase.
So this card in fact restores your opponents card. Is that correct? I am sure it is.. but it seams to really gimp what I thought was a powerful card as you are basically speeding up his board by removing a full turn b4 he can get his characters back into action.

Your friend is right, the card gives them back the character and that's it. Nothing on the card says to make them insane again. However, what happens to them while YOU have control is up to you. Feel free to send them to a story that will get them killed or driven insane again for example. Or let them be ready, but in the meantime you use them to kill an enemy character or get success tokens. Basically, when you play the card it's up to you to have a good use for that character.

Yup. Usually when taking temporary control of an opponent's character you make sure you won't have to return the character to your opponent, e.g. by sacrificing the character to pay for some effect. Alternatively you use the character to win a story (which may lead to you winning the game).
