turn 0 card plays: viable in CoC?

By Pikciwok, in CoC General Discussion

Hello everyone (my first post here),

I've played other CCGs before and in some of them the "turn 0" plays were very important for early tempo advantage and balancing a second player.

in CoC I found some very interesting 1-cost cards which can be played by the second player in first player's starting turn (namely Sacrificial Offerings , Shotgun Blast, Deep One Assault, Dampen Light, Tear Gas and Full Ride Scholarship).

Do you usually use "turn 0 plays" in your games? Is it as powerful in CoC as in other card games? Or maybe a competitive deck usually has not enough

1-cost cards to use all the domains in first player's turn and it doesn't matter whether you play that event in his or your first turn?

For me, it doesn't come up much. Since the first player doesn't go to stories his first turn that cuts out some Event cards right there. Then, as you said, you often cannot use all your domains on turn 1 so many Event cards can be played just as well on your own turn.

That's if you have them of course. Due to the way the domains ramp up you probably have a limited number of cost-1 cards anyway so you might not rely on starting with them.

This is something I take into account both when deck building and when resourcing during setup.

Dampen light, how useful is it really? It could be very useful during the beginning of your opponent's first operations phase if you could play it before they play their first card. Unfortunately If I understand it correctly, you cannot. Yog could probably use a card capable of this. Action: Choose an opponent. Increase the cost for that opponent to play cards during their next phase.?

You certainly CAN play it before they can play any cards. Look at the turn sequence chart in the rulebook. See the boxes labeled "actions may be taken"? Those are when you can play an Event. So, you can play it even before your opponent can DRAW cards, much less play them, because there is such a box after they ready/restore characters before drawing.

Ahh, I see. So there is an opportunity to take an 'Action' before the active player takes an 'action' (Playing a Character card)?

The active player has first choice of an action. If they pass, then the other player may take an action.

Thank you. I'll give 'Dampen Light' another try! Last nights leagues I drove an opponents 'Cult of Bathos' insane 2 turns in a row and totally befuddled their operations phase. I like the potential of 'Dampen Light'. So how about turn 0 plays Professor?

I love Turn 0 plays myself. My wife has a Deep Ones/Khopesh deck that's extremely brutal right now, so any time I can kill off her Cult of Bathos or anyone who gets a Khopesh prior to my turn, I take advantage of it. The goal isn't to play fair gui%C3%B1o.gif
