Usability of Scout?

By player774644, in Dust Tactics General Discussion

SSU seems to be packed with units that can deploy fast using the Scout ability. I'd want to read your thoughts on the ability in general:

  • How and when do you find it useful? What experience do you have of it?
  • In what match-ups and...
  • on what kind of maps? Scenarios / skirmish?

I have played way to little to get a grip of it and would love to understand it better as it can easily be perceived as a rather toothless ability.

Granted, I'd trade Scout for Fast any day. Scout gives you a bit of an edge in better positioning yourself at the start of the match, but then, that's it. Once the shooting starts, you better have positioned yourself really well, cause you're on your own. That is why I wonder if units like the Close Combat Squad with have both Scout AND Fast.

Having it on Fireball allows a much needed close firing walker to get closer quicker and be able to transport faster.

Any objective based game, like a capture the flag type game.

It allows a slight edge for a unit without the additional point cost of being fast.

So far I have had very little luck with the Axis scout walker.

I think SSU got scout because of how well dug into terrain the soviets were in stalingrad. And how well they knew their terrain.

Hmm i think dug up in Stalingrad won't be an edge in a timeline where they lost battle of Stalingrad:D

Well if we take that approach, then fast forward to end of war when Axis loses, and SSU and Allies end up in a 47 year long cold war, fighting over VK enrichment programs. Then the SSU collapses, Allies prosper for 15 years and then the world economy falls apart.

Did I take that too far?

We can still buy the minis so it isn't that bad. And what has scout ability to entrenched troops? I would consider it an a bility of a fast-attack force that the SSU seems to be.

If Scouting allows advanced deployment then it allows you to start in more advantageous cover.

This. Get your snipers to their hides, allow tanks to gain control of firing lanes, etc

1. In our games I've been able to make really good use with it on Hans to get into a good position. If I was comparing it to chess its almost like having a Knight for the first turn, quite useful.

2. I rarely use it against the Allies if they bring alot of Move 2 - Jump infantry due to their quick reach on the field.

3. Mainly in scenarios is where the Hans seems to get use. For Skirmish I'm usually going heavy on the heroes to give my Armor 2 infantry a real fighting chance and run out of points to spend on Hans... Operation Cerberus made it worse by adding in Angela.... Throw in a Sniper Team and my horrible rolls suddenly become the best thing since sliced bread. demonio.gif

On a side note, I really wish the Hermann/Heinrich had Scout, than I might actually field one.
