My understanding is that you cannot because you are supposed to treat it as if it were in your hand. You do not pick the event card up and put it into your hand before using it, so it's still considered a copy that is in your discard pile. Basically, Robert let's you pretend the event is both in your hand and discard pile at the same time, and until it is played, it is still in the discard pile.
