He cultivated deliberate illusion, and dabbled in the notions of the bizarre and the eccentric as an antidote for the commonplace. Most of these, however, soon shewed their poverty and barrenness; and he saw that the popular doctrines of occultism are as dry and inflexible as those of science, yet without even the slender palliative of truth to redeem them.

Sorcery in the South Pacific
While the different factions of Call of Cthulhu have traversed the world in search of the game’s new Relics, they have discovered frightening truths about the Ancient Ones’ increasing and worldwide influence. Meanwhile, the Ancient Relics cycle has also spread and matured the influence of another secretive and inscrutable group–the Order of the Silver Twilight.
No one can be truly certain yet whether the Order of the Silver Twilight seeks to save the world or enslave it, but whether they are secretly plotting the Ancient Ones’ improbable defeat or merely acting as power-hungry opportunists, more of the Silver Twilight’s talented members have begun to show their faces during key struggles for powerful Relics. We’ve seen hints of their Hidden Agenda (Curse of the Jade Emperor, 41) and caught a glimpse of one of their magical escape routes. Now, in the Shadow of the Monolith, more of the Order’s plots come to fruition.
The Order of the Silver Twilight has long been suspected of conducting sacrificial Rituals behind closed doors. While many have come to believe their lodges serve as social fronts for powerful sorcery, it was uncertain whether Silver Twilight members had mastered quicker magic that could still warp reality to their goals. Well, in Shadow of the Monolith, the other factions gain reason to fear the Order’s increasingly powerful mastery of sorcery, specifically of blood magic. Magnus Stiles (Shadow of the Monolith, 122) leads the Silver Twilight’s expedition into the South Pacific, and this Sorcerer has the power and the will to sacrifice his fellow Sorcerers to ensure the Order claims the region’s Relics and advances its aims.
The Order of the Silver Twilight has long deemed such sacrifices acceptable costs in the face of their opposition’s powerful advances. Indeed, the Order is willing to risk almost any sacrifice that aids them. Each is considered a Necessary Evil (Shadow of the Monolith, 123), and one has to think carefully before condemning the Order’s methods. If they’re right, if their sacrifices give them the power to see their agenda to fruition, then perhaps it could be argued their end may justify their means. After all, it is a deadly game that holds at stake nothing less than the survival of all humanity. But the question remains: what does the Order of the Silver Twilight hope to accomplish?
