So I'm new to the game and am a little confused about unopposed challenges. On any challenge if you CAN defend do you HAVE to defend or can you just chose to not defend it and let the attacker get the bonuses?

Declaring defenders is always optional. What in the rules made you think otherwise? Anything not worded clearly?
