So, who wants MONSTER FIGURES?

By Tibs, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

I said they'd never do it... but in the back of my mind, I knew it was an inevitability.

I won't be getting any because it's not all the monsters and there's no room and I don't have the money, but that Dunwich Horror figure looks tempting...

First off the figures look pretty good. I do not have any of the investigator figures but if I were a rich man with millions of dollars I would get them all to go with my Arkham Horror play room. That said I am of two minds on it. AH is going into novels, figures, and dice. I am scared that like alot of companies they are overextending themselves and losing focus on what made them great. The games. I am all for them making a buck .The more money they make the longer they stay in business and make products that I would buy. I just would rather them make more quality products for the game than all this other stuff. But if they can do both, more power to them.

Jeez, it's Dark Young! My friggin dream. I'd didnt used it for AH in any situation, but those minis are brillian for MoM, and they also come with special MoM stand with slot for monster token. Shame they don't come with monster tokens themselves.

I surprised they actually did this, too, but I must admit they look GORGEOUS. Not just some standard off-the-line pre-paint job.

I'm a little curious where they got that mini for the Dunwich Horror, as I seem to recall the beast being invisible in the actual story. Were there other stories that put a more definitive face on the creature, or are they just making things up here?

Coincidentally I just finished reading this story today!

Very entertaining tale right up there with the Shadow at Innmouth.

From the plot you are right it, the Horror WAS invisible.

However Professors from Miskatonic sprayed it with Powder of Ibn-Ghazi thus revelaing it's true appearance.

The face is a bit different than I expected though. I was thinking the upper half of the face - not the front half.

Agree with you Tibs.

While nice I could never entertain getting the investigators due to costs involved and I suppose the same applies for these figures.

I'm not exactly clear how these can be incorporated into the game either unless you slot them into the base when the tile is drawn from the bag?

But then from what I recall of MoM the tiles are supposed to be in there permanently?

The only practical use I can see for these is are spawn monsters which aren't drawn from the bag.

And like you I'm tempted by the Dunwich Horror fig but $10? Pass. sad.gif

Tibs: I find an interesting contradiction between your first reason and your second and third. Not that I don't understand the impulse.

Honestly, although these look, in general, to be cool, I don't think I'll be going for them. Money aside, I already have Mansions (and thus the unpainted versions of many of these), and the ones that Mansions doesn't have aren't all that common. Also, I don't think it's nearly as important to have minis in Arkham as in Mansions, since they're not to scale.

I would by figures for important one-of-a-kind monsters like the Dunwich Horror, the Black Pharaoh or some of the spawns. I think there's a good chance of the Horror ending up in my set.

Man, if I could afford it, I'd totally get enough to have full sets.

Why? You have them already.

And yes, you guise tempted by Dunwich Horror, and I'm tempted by Dark Young. Also DH would be nice epic battle in MoM.

Im new to AH (got it for xmas) but love it! As someone whos into miniatures as well I'll probably get these, albeit one at a time and as pennies allow and probably inbetween buying expansions. I was also considering getting into CoC LCG, but might put that on hold, and get some monster/investigator minis.

No. Im not really impressed, the whole thing seems stupendously impractical. Monster surges become full on expeditions to assemble and the bases are cumbersome - try imagining this - you have to place all your monster tokens side by side, no stacking, but they all have a significant plastic perimeter increasing their size. Just no, its going to spill onto the carpet and identifying where they actually are after someone knocks the board is going to get in the way too. Not to mention storage for all thats needed to complete a set. Money down the drain IMO. However I will buy the DH and any spawn monsters, except the Beings of Ib, which would be quite pointless to make minis of. Those deserve some kind of visual upgrade and there wont be too many occasions when they clutter the board. Masks will be cool.

The real news here I think is that this looks like the coronal aura of a rising collectors edition...

You missing half the point. Arkham Horror is not the only game they can be used for. They're created by concept of Mansions of Madness monsters and fit there perfectly. The only thing they lack is MoM monster token.

Yeah, regarding the spawn monsters, my first thought, inexplicably, was "oh man, Servants of Glaaki" which of course they don't have, because that would be a foolishly specific thing to produce in the first batch, right up there with a Tendril of Nyogtha (though this would also be cool). However, my third or so thought was that one could just get Cultist figurines and use them, not only as SoGs, but also in Tulzscha games, and that this would actually be even cooler.

I have MoM. That lovingly designed board tile? Put 3 cultists in there and all goes black...so my point is applied to both, just with more problems for AH.

I'm definetly getting them!

Although i'm quite glad they don't release them all at once. Because that would have got expensive. Fortunatly i already have the figures for Mansions, so i "only" have to spend 122 dollars for my first batch. I won't dare to think what the next ones will cost.

But its an awesome game, so it's worth every penny!

But that's always the case with MoM, painted or no, right? I suppose you could house-rule it to use only the tokens, but it wouldn't look nearly as impressive.

To get all that you would need to cover the multiples from all expansions would cost $296.46. And that's just this first "wave." It just doesn't make sense to use these in the game, when sometimes 3-4 (or even more) might be on the same location. No way in heck they'd remotely fit together.

One thing that makes sense to get, though, are a set of Cultists, but only to use for games when the GOO's ability gives them some special bonus, so then they're a nice visual reminder of that (anything to help you remember some details like that for this game is a good thing).

Also, having the Spawn monsters and Dunwich Horror would be useful, for the sake of differentiating them from other monsters.

My two cents on this issue...

I'm not thrilled. And not interested at all. It seems like they've taken minis from MoM and painted, saying "hey, these could work well for AH". How many Cultists do we have in the monsters cup? And how many Dark Youngs? It's a non sense playing with one cultist mini and countless cardboard chits for the others. Plus. Chits do stack very well. I hardly doubt there it'd be possible stacking the monsters; hence: overcrowded board. And overcrowded off-board: in a Hank game, I end up easily with 15-20 monster trophies. If I played with minis, I'd need another table for trophies. And this is the first wave. I'm not intentioned in paying 300-400 € for a complete monsters cup of minis I don't have the space to store at home or on the gaming board.

The only interesting point in this piece of news, for me, at least, is the commercial meaning of these minis: some of them are not in MoM. This clearly should imply that in a coming MoM expansion we will see some of the minis now existing for AH. This could be more interesting. But anyway, even for MoM, I'd rather prefer having the chits than the minis

You are right - they are impractical for placing on the board in large numbers and will require a lot of storage space by the board when not being used.

How on earth will they go in the outskirts or sky?

However I will still buy them, for decorative purposes. I can see the Dunwich Horror getting some use on the board.

Edit: ordered wave 1 figures

Nope, it's not.

you were in my head when i wrote it, then? as I wrote, I was thinking of mentioning the thing with MoM but I didnt bother. So yes, my point was about both, tailored to the AH people. You may disagree with my opinion, a fact I am not interested in pursuing, but that is (and was) the reality of what I was saying and thinking.

Yes, I actually was.

ah, then you are having this conversation with yourself. You want Dr Carson, down the hall.
