Lucas Blackwood vs. Assault of the Kraken.

By MrGloverGlover, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Hi all,

I'll be as brief as possible as this is much more a timing question than a rules question exactly. I'll run through the scenario as far as we were confident with it, I'd greatly appreciate if somebody with the appropriate knowledge could make any corrections to it and then complete it. This arose in a recent joust game between a Greyjoy and Stark - and whilst we came to some sort of solution to carry on, we didn't have the luxury of time to consult all the appropriate charts and discuss.

1) Mr Greyjoy wins initiative and declares himself first player. Plots and martialling are irrelevant.

2) Mr Greyjoy declares (M) attack, declares stealth on Robb Stark and Mr Stark declares no defenders.

3) Lucas Blackwood valiantly throws himself under the bus to satisfy claim (his life has got to suck, right?).

4) As the first player, Mr Greyjoy triggers Assault of the Kraken from his hand and prepares to initiate a second (M) challenge.

5) As the second player, Mr Stark triggers Lucas Blackwood's response and may make a (M) challenge as his next player action.

6) Mr Greyjoy declares his next challenge and kneels a character to make his second (M) challenge, but when it becomes Mr Stark's opportunity to to take a player action, he also kneels his Robb Stark as an attacker.

7) Now what? Should Mr Stark's (M) challenge been fully resolved before Mr Greyjoy carries out his AotK challenge, player actions and all? Or does Mr Greyjoy's challenge take priority as the first player?

Apologies if the question is banal to some, but from what I can remember of the eight or nine months we've been playing, it's one of the more complicated situations we've encountered - or perhaps it just seems that way because of the interruption of play. Either way, guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers.

(not great with rules questions so take my answer with a grain of salt).

Assault allows the player to make an additional challenge of the same type as his next challenge.

Lucas allows the player the make a M challenge as his next action.

There is a player action window in between all (regular) challenges, therefore, in my opinion:

1. Challenge 1 ends

2. Lucas Challenge begins and is fully resolved

3. Assault Challenge begins.

Your error in describing the scenario is that the Greyjoy player jumped the gun in declaring his second (M) challenge. That is not a player action - it is a framework action. Between challenges, all players are given the opportunity to initiate player actions. So the Stark player's chance to initiate the Blackwood-inspired M challenge comes before the Greyjoy's player to declare another "regular" challenge (no matter what the type). So that's between 5 and 6 in your outline?

Bottom line - the Greyjoy player "illegally" (though probably more like "accidentally") did not give the Stark player his proper opportunity to take his action/initiate the challenge.

Absolutely perfect, thanks chaps.

As I recall I think what we quickly decided played out in exactly this fashion anyway, so no harm done.

I absolutely love Lucas Blackwood, the little rascal that he is.

I only refer to him as Kenny.
