Tyrion LotR

By Underworld40k, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Quick question after a debate with my groups Lannister player.

Knowing that i run frozen moat in a lot of my stark decks they enquired what would happen if tyrion is in a challenge and then blanked. My inital thought was nothing, the clansmen are participating as soon as tyrion is, the loss of his passive dosent change that once its under way much like icon removal dose not remove a character, or blanking a text box after lasting ability has been used (like Robb stark LOW or CS Drogo)

This seems to be supported by the faq

"Once a character is in a challenge, it can only be removed from that challenge by an effect that specifically removes the character from a challenge, an effect that removes the character from play, or by an effect that changes control of that character."

Its simple if tyrion is stood and declared in a challenge again, after his text block is blank its blank and thats that, but i've never played against a card like tyrion before and am curious how it actually works, also it will make the lannister player much happier to know one way or the other.

I assume that i have missed something or have interpreted something incorrectly while debating this in my group and as im more or less the rules guy for my group im in need of a higher authority :D

This one may be a little tricky.

Let's say you have a location that reads "While Tyrion Lannister is standing, kneeling Clansman characters get +1 STR." What happens to that +1 STR if you blank the location? It goes away, right? That's because this hypothetical location's effect is continuous - but with a condition. That means both the location text and the condition (a standing Tyrion) must be true for the effect to be applicable.

Tyrion's actual text is:

"While Tyrion Lannister is participating in a challenge, all knelt Clansman characters you control are also participating in that challenge."

Pretty much the same as the hypothetical location, right? The condition in this case is Tyrion's participation (and the text). But the thing to recognize here is that Tyrion's ability is a continuous (though conditional) effect, not a lasting effect or a passive effect.

Your analysis is completely true for something like Walder Frey, Greatjon Umber, or Guardian Wolf with their "after X happens" style triggered and passive effects. If Tyrion read something more along the lines of "After Tyrion Lannister is declared as an attacker or defender, all knelt Clansman characters you control enter the challenge as participants on the same side," your analysis of blanking not removing them would be 100% correct. But because Tyrion is actually worded as "if X is true, Y is true also," X must continue to be true in order for Y to continue to be true.

Hope that makes sense. It comes down to the fact that Tyrion's text is a (conditional) continuous effect, not a lasting effect created by a passive or triggered effect.

New there was something i would be missing.

Thanks for the detailed response as always, time to order myself some more beyond the wall packs for frozen moat goodness :D
